WILLMAR, Minn. — A 75-year-old man has died after a sheriff's deputy in rural Minnesota shocked him with a Taser during an attempted eviction, officials announced Wednesday.

The cause of Michael James Yanacheak's death in Willmar is undetermined pending further investigation by the medical examiner, the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said in a statement.

The BCA, which was called in to investigate the incident, said Riley Kampsen is the Kandiyohi County sheriff’s deputy who deployed his Taser. Kampsen has five years of law enforcement experience.

According to the BCA timeline, two Kandiyohi County sheriff’s deputies and two Willmar police officers went to Yanacheak’s apartment Monday morning to perform a court-ordered eviction. The officers tried to get him to open the door, but Yanacheak didn’t respond. After about an hour, the apartment manager pried open the apartment door and officers went inside.

“They found Yanacheak in a bedroom, where he picked up a kitchen knife and walked towards them," the BCA statement said. “The law enforcement officers tried to retreat out of the apartment, but at one point, Kampsen deployed his Taser, striking Yanacheak.”

Did the 75 year old suffer from dementia? Being elderly he should have been treated with deference—an eviction is traumatic, more so for elderly and even worse for those that may be senile or suffer from cognitive degeneration I donor know the man’s health status but at 75 I bet undiagnosed dementia may be underlying his actions. Then again he could just be an angry old

tasers work, the man attacked the officers with a deadly weapon.

would you prefer they throw him out a window?

Just stop posting, the hole you're in is deep enough.

Why in blazes does a 49 year old sheriff have to taze a 75 year old? Just grab the dude by the arm and move him.

Some police forces use bean bags, rubber bullets, pepper spray etc as non lethal force—not sure if the outcome would have been better for a frail old guy....

The 75 was carrying a kitchen knife—”just grabbing him” would have been an iffy strategy.

There is a vast array of “kitchen knives” from spreaders to butter knives to steak knives to chef knives. I am done with cops overreacting. There were four cops and one old kook.

What, a butter knife? A steak knife? A potato peeler? Puhleez. There were four cops and one old kook. Cry me a river. I am sure the cops were shaking in their boots.

I think you are over-reacting.

They used what they had reason to believe was non-lethal force.

It is possible that other tactics might have been better—but that depends on the exact situation on the ground.

Well that’s a shame. Add Bumpurs to a long long list of crazy people who’ve died after engaging with the police.

Remember that drunk who brandished at people in Mesa? He was on the ground, unarmed and begging for his life.

Cop shot him anyway.

I am not overreacting. What happened to bonking the old crow with a baton on the arm? Cops know tasers are only for extreme situations.

Maybe the cop thought moving the dude might be somewhat more difficult after getting stabbed.

It depends on the details:

—How long was the knife?

—If they had batons how long were they?

etc etc etc....

I am sure there are detailed instructions for each department for when and when not to use tasers.

If they followed those procedures I have no issue with it.
