WILLMAR, Minn. — A 75-year-old man has died after a sheriff's deputy in rural Minnesota shocked him with a Taser during an attempted eviction, officials announced Wednesday.
The cause of Michael James Yanacheak's death in Willmar is undetermined pending further investigation by the medical examiner, the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said in a statement.
The BCA, which was called in to investigate the incident, said Riley Kampsen is the Kandiyohi County sheriff’s deputy who deployed his Taser. Kampsen has five years of law enforcement experience.
According to the BCA timeline, two Kandiyohi County sheriff’s deputies and two Willmar police officers went to Yanacheak’s apartment Monday morning to perform a court-ordered eviction. The officers tried to get him to open the door, but Yanacheak didn’t respond. After about an hour, the apartment manager pried open the apartment door and officers went inside.
“They found Yanacheak in a bedroom, where he picked up a kitchen knife and walked towards them," the BCA statement said. “The law enforcement officers tried to retreat out of the apartment, but at one point, Kampsen deployed his Taser, striking Yanacheak.”

He was evicted, it was not an attempted eviction
“They found Yanacheak in a bedroom, where he picked up a kitchen knife and walked towards them,”
I assume bodycam video will back up this claim. Just because they say it doesn’t mean it’s true.
He was evicted, it was not an attempted eviction

He was permanently evicted. Fatally evicted.
You could say he’s currently deceased.
This is an AP article. Safe to say.... Sources say he is allegedly deceased.
Tasers should be banned, they cause death, heart attacks and other maladies. No reason for them to be in use.
End qualified immunity.
I’m a far right nut, but this has to stop. Can’t have a one sided way of doing things.
Current.
““They found Yanacheak in a bedroom, where he picked up a kitchen knife and walked towards them,””
Yep. Another suicide by cop.
Evicted from the planet.
Cop high fives all.
So if someone comes to attack you with a knife, you don’t believe you should use a weapon kind?
Tasering is a safer form of stopping a deadly assault than just shooting the bastard.
Sux for the 75 year old man that he rolled the dice and lost.
> Tasers should be banned… <
The taser is meant to be a less-lethal option. Often it is wrongly used. For example, maybe a cop doesn’t feel like wrestling with a subject, or chasing after a subject. So he deploys the taser. But here the subject evidently grabbed a knife. All bets are off. The taser use was appropriate, in my opinion.
> End qualified immunity. <
I kind of agree with you here. Sometimes a police officer must make snap decisions while under pressure. In those cases qualified immunity should apply. But suppose a cop casually decides to behave like garbage just because he can? Qualified immunity should absolutely not apply.
Murder 3 charge needed...
This crap has to stop!
Wrong. Attempted Murder should be the charge. But the criminal is dead. So what’s the point.
This sucks for the senior citizen and everyone else, I’m thinking.
I have gun’s and a taser...What would you rather I do?
He put up some Resistance, but the cop made the Charge stick.
Did you see in NY that 8 illegals savagely attacked 2 cops when they were on the ground and none of them were detained, they all walked with no charges.
I see what you did there. Very Stunning!
