Just after midnight on November 17, 1978, a teenage boy pulled into the parking lot of the Burger Chef where he worked in Speedway, Indiana. The lights were on, so he figured his coworkers were still inside cleaning up. Deciding to pay them a visit, he walked up to the back door and noticed it was open, which was odd. When he entered, he realized the store was empty and the cash-register drawers were on the floor.
Two days later, the four young people who should’ve been closing up that night were found dead in a neighboring county. More than 40 years later, what happened remains a total mystery.
After the teenager who discovered the scene called the police, the store manager came in and determined that $581 in cash was missing. It might be safe to assume that the perp(s) are likely already dead from other crimes the got ‘caught’ at.
The police were idiots.
Speedway, Indiana is a suburb of Indianapolis. Indianapolis has been known for killings forever. The urban youths and gangs make the place a no go zone now.
I remember other Burger Chefs in Indiana. They were great! Far better than McDonalds. I’m not sure but I think Hardees might have taken them over. And of course, Hardees is mostly gone now.
I wonder just how often that is the case, that the perps are later killed doing more crime or imprisoned and are never tied to that earlier crime. Not like they would rush to confess more crimes to increase their legal system woes.
I’ve read that murder cases and bank robberies in many large cities have woefully low solve rates. Maybe many of the guilty are dead or in prison within a few years of the original crime.

Seems I went to a Burger Chef a few times in the 1970’s - not a lot - shoot I remember an Arthur Treachers about 20 miles from here.
One thing I remember about 1978 or 1979 - tacos were 33 cents at Taco Bell
And the food was prepared in the store - unlike today (the meat came in bags that were boiled to warm them up - this was around 25 years ago)

In the Twin Cities, there used to be a number of Hardee’s. Most were in decent suburbs.
But in the last 25 years, so many have closed. Not sure why either. I like their food - especially the Frisco Burger.
Nowadays, I got drive 35 minutes east or 45 minutes south to find one.

McDonald’s had a burger, fries & soda deal that gave you change back from your dollar.
I remember burgers were $.25 and cheeseburgers were $.30.
NOBODY beats Whataburger, though!
Burger Chef Big Shef and Sauce
Ingredients:
2 parts Dill relish (not sweet relish)
1 part Dehydrated onions
Salad dressing (Miracle Whip will do)
Louisiana Hot Sauce
Add the dehydrated onions to the dill relish. Let it
sit for a couple of hours for the onions to soak up the
juice from the relish. Then add that mix to the salad
dressing. Add a little hot sauce to bring out the flavor,
but not too much!
Insides of bun sections should be lightly sprayed with
coconut oil and toasted. Meat patties should be grilled.
Big Shef assembly (in order) - Bun heel, small slice of
American cheese, salted & peppered small meat patty,
bun center, second meat patty. Big Shef sauce, shredded
lettuce, Bun top.
(For a time Burger Chef was #2 nationally behind McDonald’s
and then it was purchased by a non-restaurant/non-food service
corporation that killed it dead.)

Being from Indianapolis I remember this case vividly. It was a big story for weeks.
The problem with the local Hardee’s is that a two car line takes about as much time as a line twice around the building at Chick-fil-A. I think every Hardee’s burger is made from beef on a cow raised from a calf while you wait. Good, but pricey, burgers other than that.
That’s absolute crazy BS!
I go to Speedway at the time.
My son owns a house there too.
Booger Chef was my favorite in Muskogee
