Good morning!
23 Birds Of Winter
How Many Can You Spot Where You Live?
No one likes the frigid, blinding blizzards of winter, but unlike humans, birds can easily escape them by spreading their wings until they’re out of the country. However, some species prefer staying in the miserable cold weather rather than flying to a warmer climate for some strange reason. Which birds of winter on this list can you spot?
Birds of winter don’t migrate during the icy season. Instead, they take shelter in evergreen trees to keep warm. They also visit birdbaths more frequently because most water elsewhere freezes at this time of year. Ultimately, many survive till spring.
If you’ve ever wondered which birds stick around during the cold winter, continue reading this article. I will discuss 23 North American birds of winter that migrate to or remain in the US.

Not getting many birds this year- last year was a banner year (although not as good as decades ago when we had all manner of different birds- now its only a few species)
Anyone else notice this this winter? We thought maybe the seed we bought was rancid or something. Last year we would fill the feeder, and by evening would have to fill it again. This year we go for several days between filling.
Those rascals build their nests with my straw mulch. Fortunately they don’t need a lot. 🤣
Beautiful weather! In the 70s which is causing my irises to bloom early but heard there is an "atmospheric river" headed our way in the next week or two with six inches of desperately needed rain.
I've lost and/or forgotten the name of these b/c they are very old:
I think this one is called "City Lights."
Getting ready for Valentine's Day:
And my garden helper taking a break:
But I often see beautiful cardinals, especially in the winter, both the red papa birds and the tawny mamas. They really stand out against the snow, which we had a lot of this past week.
My daughter-in-law gave me a grow kit for Christmas…… a ceramic pot with holes in it (alike the one pictured below, but taller with 5 rows of 3holes), and she had pre planted it with the mixture they sent.
Instructions were to keep it in kitchen (no direct sunlight) and spray water mist on holes and top twice-a-day. They said it would start to sprout in about 2 weeks but it has been over 8 weeks and no sign of sprouting. She planted one for herself too at the same time, and same experience, it is not sprouting either.
I don’t know what went wrong? I want to try again with a different container outdoors when the weather warms up. But also don’t want to abandon the indoors pot. Any of you have stories of experience with this?
I just had a thought .... I can use my garden fencing panels to make a compost pile! I have enough to enclose the 4 small metal raised beds I am taking with me & should have enough left over for a compost area. I need to take the fencing to the new place anyway, so some of it will just be on the next trailer load. The wire rectangles are 2x4” so I will tie on the plastic mesh I saved after changing out the frames to wire and the leaves won’t escape.
The weather improved substantially last week compared to what we’ve had lately here in Central Missouri. Today we actually got some sunshine and it’s in the mid 50°s outside.
But... I accidentally left Nanner’s ignition key in the run position when I stopped working on the swingset frame for the grandkids... then we had a couple weeks of sub-zero weather... $400 worth of two months old starting batteries frozen and junked.
I’m slightly annoyed with that little oversight...
Time to shop for seed starting supplies for some of us. Days are getting noticeably longer.
Might see if I can get another high tunnel truss frame in this weekend. Holes are dug, frame’s laying there and I can park the dysfunctional F150 there as the crane truck now that it’s no longer a driver. It runs enough for that and I don’t have to worry about dismantling the “crane”.
The red Chevy(I hate red for a vehicle color) seems to be a good truck.
I made it to work one slippery day from 40 miles away and was 1 of 5 people who made it in out of 50. The others 4 lived within 2-5 miles.
Blows their minds, but like you, I grew up in a place where we didn’t see actual pavement for a few months, aside from the major highways. We drove on packed powder. I learned to drive doing donuts in mall and large store parking lots. The cops would kick us out at some point and we’d move on to another one. Good times.
Gorgeous first pix.
I’m ready to order seeds n picked out several that humming birds favor. And of course sunflower for the bigger crew
I get my bird seed for feeders at a mill store. Blend called winter mix It is more expensive but it’s what we started with
I do my own sugar water for hummingbirds No red coloring
