FROM WASHINGTON: Senator Bayard Takes the Oath of Allegiance; Confiscated Lands to be Homesteads for Soldiers (1/27/1864)

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Jan. 26.

A NEW FEATURE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL QUESTION.

Prominent Germans who arrived here from the West to-day, indicate a new element in the Anti-Slavery politics, with reference to the next Presidency. They represent that the citizens of their nationality have determined to put in the field a candidate irrevocably committed to the destruction of Slavery, if the National Convention of the supporters of the war does not supply them with one.

THE POST-OFFICE ORDER SYSTEM.

The House Post-office Committee will to-morrow bless every man and woman in the nation who has occasion to transmit small sums of money by ma[???] by reporting a bill establishing in the United States substantially the Post-office order system of England.

SENATOR BAYARD.

Senator BAYARD was in tears when he left the Senate to-day. Politicians doubt if Delaware will improve upon him in the successor which her Democratic Legislature will send here in his place. The one now threatening us is savory in the politics of Pennsylvania, under the name of "Charley Brown."

GEN. SICKLES TO HAVE A COMMAND.

It is said to-night that Gen. AUGUR will be sent into the field, and that the command of the defences of Washington will be given to Gen. SICKLES.

GEN. M'CLERNAND.

The President to-day restored Gen. MCCLERNANI to his rank, and ordered him to report to Gen. BANKS.

THE HAMEOND COURT-MARTIAL.

The doors of the HAMMOND Court-martial have been thrown open. Dr. Cox, Medical Purveyor at Baltimore, testified to-day that the supplies for the hospitals at Gettysburgh were bought of WYTH & BROTHER, of Philadelphia, and were sent to Gettysburgh by the way of Harrisburgh instead of directly, and seemingly for the purpose of giving business to favorite railroads. Dr. HAYES will be examined to-morrow about the supplies.
