Kenneth Eugene Smith has become the first person in history to be executed with nitrogen gas.
The convicted killer, 58, was put to death in the William C. Holman facility's execution chamber in Atmore, Alabama.
After the reading of his last rights, a tight gas mask was placed over Smith's nose and mouth, before a stream of 100 percent nitrogen gas suffocated him. The gas mask remained on his face for 15 minutes to ensure the murderer was dead.
Witnesses were led into the viewing room at 6:55pm, and Smith was pronounced dead half an hour later. Despite fears over the untested method going wrong, there is no early indication the execution did not go smoothly.
He was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder-for-hire slaying of a preacher's wife in 1988, where he was paid just $1,000 for the hit.
Smith's pastor John Ewell told DailyMail.com before his execution that the killer was 'really struggling' with the reality of his imminent death, and officials said he barely touched his final meal of steak, hashbrowns and eggs from Waffle House. The historic execution divided opinions, including among Supreme Court justices who voted 6-3 to allow the procedure to go ahead, with the untested method previously branded 'torture' by the UN.
Smith's execution marked the first time a new method had been used on America's death row since lethal injections were first introduced 42 years ago.
But one of the primary reasons Alabama has turned to nitrogen gas for Smith's execution has been the widespread struggles American prisons have had in obtaining lethal injection drugs in recent years.

“Project Innocence” is on your side. They go for exoneration.
Exoneration isn’t “Innocence”
See, Ken? Not all is lost. You have become an answer to a trivia game.
Yeah ... a little LN2 becomes a whole lot of gaseous N2. The expansion ratio is several hundred ... But it’s really not bad if your shop is set up properly.
That is not correct. The gasp reflex is caused by buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood. Breathing an inert gas such as pure nitrogen doesn't have that effect.
OOOOOooooooo! That don’t seem fast enough.
My concern about capital punishment has to do with more than guilt or innocence. It doesn’t matter to me, I think that the death penalty is wrong either way.
But today, the same degenerate judicial system that can sentence a woman to probation and community service for murder (no prison time) can just as easily condemn you to death for the same act.
It’s starting to look as if you only need to be against the wrong side of the political winds to die, or with the other side to live.

didnt post this for your benifit. I did it for the newbies who don't know your a moron and your posts are moronic.
check osha for more deaths by N2 and you will find they all dropped without a struggle.
What’s wrong with a good old bullet straight through the heart? Nothing fancy or complicated, and death is guaranteed. Next they’ll be doing contraptions like you see on the old batman series. A candle burns a string which releases a mouse which runs over a button which starts an electric toy train which dumps a steel ball down a chute which cracks open a bottle of cyanide.
The Daily Mail thinks its readers are stupid enough to believe that a human being can survive 22 minutes breathing nothing but nitrogen.
You can’t.
People have held their breath that long but their brains were still getting O2. Breathe pure N2 and in just a few breaths there is no more O2 reaching the brain. You’ll lose consciousness in seconds and be brain dead in single-digit minutes.
Ever breathe helium from a party balloon and hold it in until you got light-headed? Nitrogen is the same effect. You pass out with no discomfort, maybe even have a little euphoria. And. You. Never. Wake. Up.
WRONG!
Failed biology, did we? It's not lack of O2, it's the build-up of CO2. If you're breathing any inert gas -- say, nitrogen, or helium -- the CO2 gets flushed and there's no build-up, hence no urge to breathe. And since inert gasses by their nature are non-reactive, there are no unpleasant side-effects.
They've been using helium for assisted suicides for years, and if that produced any discomfort, we'd have heard about it long ago. When if fact we've heard the exact opposite. The fall asleep peacefully.
All Alabama did was substitute inert nitrogen for inert helium.

Exactly.
Going to 100% pure nitrogen creates a negative concentration gradient of nitrogen in your respiratory system and it literally sucks the oxygen out of your bloodstream.
You go out like a light.
“your a moron”
Brilliant !
“ your posts are moronic.”
Posts ? What other post ?
Haha!
Yesterday, I was reading that the first few hours of a fetus’ life can be affected into causing schizophrenia later in life.
We also know that Marijuana causes spontaneous abortions and schizophrenia.
Has Marijuana so affected our population that craziness seems rampant even (or especially) within our justice system?
Thirty years ago, I had a Miami deposition interrupted and the defense attorney stepped out for many minutes.
The court reporter and I exchanged pleasantries, when she stated, “Y’know, I’m Cuban, and I’m distressed what’s happening here in America. This attorney meets her boyfriend about this time every day to do cocaine together”.
Maybe not so readily in Miami, but ingesting Marijuana nationally elsewhere COULD account for these (otherwise) unaccountable judicial attacks on Logic and Reason.
Otherwise, to quote radio host Chris Plante, “It’s good to be a Demoocrat”.
They should have pumped acid into his arteries first.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Death by nitrogen causes a person to pass out and never wake up. It is a silent killer. There is no pain and no expectations and no gasping for air , just out like a light, the end.
Insanity has taken over so many things, it’s not surprising that it’s taken the courts and justice, too. I wouldn’t blame it all on Marijuana, but nobody can convince me that it’s not a dangerous drug.
If Bidens DOJ was telling me someone needs to be executed, I would have a hard time believing it.
