A long time ago, there was a Free Republic Book Club ... mostly because I opened my mouth and a bunch of people told me to organize one. I haven't pinged it in a long time. (Actually, another book club started, so I stopped.)
Any way, has anyone read any good books lately. Fiction, non-fiction, genre, mainstream. Anything you want to share?
Has anyone WRITTEN any good books that the rest of us should check out?
If you liked the tv series Longmire, I’d recommend author Jeff Carson’s series featuring his David Wolf character. I’m 1/3 through book #16. Best to read in order they were written.
Also a fan of L.T. Ryan’s “Jack Noble” series, J.B. Turner’s “Jon Reznick” series, Vince Milam’s “Case Lee” series, Andrew Peterson’s “Nathan McBride” series, and Brian Andrews & Jeffrey Wilson “Tier One” series.
Yes, I like thrillers ;~ )
Hey! I resemble that remark.
Reading the three cornered war, the fight for the west between the confederates, Indians, and the Union. War of northern aggression in the New Mexico area.
There is a British TV series (on PBS in the states) about it...James, Seigfreid, Tristan and others...It is very good...
I loved The Frontiersman!
Another great read is Follow The River by James Alexander Thom.
You should give Father Brown a try. Very sweet little series about a priest who solves murders and other crimes. Based on the character created by G.K. Chesterton. I usually watch it on Saturday nights if I’m home.
I highly recommend the works of Matt Bracken as well.
I’d add his Anthology as well, with a focus on the stories of Dr. X and When The Music Stops.
Didn’t realize Matt was (finally?) going to write another book after Zerhoun. Zerhoun to me was very compelling historical fiction, so to speak. I contributed in a small way as an editor to that storyline early on. He also had a number of working titles and covers early on.
In addition to Matt’s books and short stories, I’d recommend the two that follow:
Day of Wrath by William Forschten (more of a novella than a book). Breathtakingly real fiction. https://www.amazon.com/Day-Wrath-William-R-Forstchen-ebook/dp/B00MU1NNRO
Attack by Kurt Schlichter. Essentially an after-action report of an October 7th style attack within the US. The style reminded me of Red Storm Rising by Clancy. https://www.amazon.com/Attack-Kurt-Schlichter-ebook/dp/B0CR1N7R8T
I also read the 1619 Project. Mostly liberal propaganda. Each chapter was written by a different author about some aspect of race in American history. Some chapters were very informative, like one on the Indian Removal Act and history of minstrel shows. One of the most telling things about the book as a whole as the authors' intentional omission of the democrat party's culpability for nearly every racist aspect of American history. You can hardly find the democrat party mentioned in a negative way in the book. And they refer to many great American blacks, like Frederick Douglass and Zora Neale Hurston, etc., without mentioning that they were Republican who saw the Democrats as the biggest threat to black progress. (I didn't buy it, of course. I checked it out at the library.)
One Nation Under Blackmail by Whitney Webb
LOL...I just wrote about the same series before I got to your post...It is a very good series...
My husband and I listen to Librovox recordings on road trips. Thank you for your contribution.
Yes but most of them written some time ago.
“Another great read is Follow The River by James Alexander Thom.”
Sounds good - thanks for the tip!

I am a daily FR reader and infrequent poster. I have written three books, all of which I think FR readers might enjoy. All are available as paperbacks, e-books and audiobooks.
I’m particularly pleased with the latest, a novel entitled The Flickering Torch. I think it is very timely and that it will resonate with many of you. Feedback from readers has been very positive.
I hope you will consider reading one or more. I’m no Matt Bracken, but I think they are good books.
Matt Bracken’s new book will be titled “Doomsday Reef”. He says it is his last book. It is supposed to be available in 2 or 3 months.
I have just ordered Stephen Hunter’s latest it arrives today. I’ll let you know about it.
Very few books grip me enough to finish them. I am about to start reading the same book that I read once every few years. I know that sounds strange, but the book is so well written and captivates me every time. The Robe.
Loved that book. I may reread it now!
I enjoy reading books by James Patterson, David Baldacci....
