A sculptor has expressed renewed hope for a large-scale memorial to Benny Hill, on the centenary of the comedian's birth.
The Benny Hill Show ran on BBC and ITV from 1955 to 1989, making the Southampton-born star a household name.
Barnsley sculptor Graham Ibbeson was commissioned to make a fibreglass mould of the late comedian in 2004, but it has remained in storage ever since.
He said a public statue would be a fitting tribute to Hill's talent.
Mr Ibbeson said: "He was a comic genius. His stage was everybody's living room.

But by golly, he sure was funny (Benny Hill, not the Duke of Wellington).
Here’s a little Benny Hill for a Sunday Afternoon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kV3LoomRlqA
If things keep going the way they are in the world it will be taken down because he’s just another white guy.
I’m thinking it will be no time at all before Feminazi’s attack and dismantle the statue.
The article talks about his humor being “sexist and racist”
I think he is worth a statue AND a national holiday off work...
The author of the article would have a fit with the youtube clip I posted at post 3.
BENNY: Alr-i-i-i-i-ight! Tat!!
I remember watching Benny Hill with my Dad while growing up.
I say this because my own father was a comedic magician of that era who came through vaudeville, burlesque and eventual obscurity. Buddy O'Day was a master magician who showed me sketches of illusions that some of David Copperfield would eventually rediscover on his own and use...but his abrasive personality off stage taught me more of how NOT to go about. RIP dad.
I agree! I seem to recall that even after he had plenty of money, he always lived simply, as if he were still poor... walked to work, mended his own clothes, never bought a home or car. He never married and left his money to nieces and nephews.
He deserves a statue just so Ben Elton can complain about him again.
Benny for all his flaws was more British than the current crop of mainstream political leaders like Sir Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak IMHO.
I don’t know about the “racist” moniker, but his humor WAS sexist ( I think it really showcased men’s sexism) and it was hilarious. And I’m a man….
He was great fun!
He made us men laugh at ourselves, to some degree.
Have they put up a Jimmy Saville statue yet?
By “todays” standards it would come across a bit mean (not mine) when Benny skit after skit would slap the top of Jackie Wrights head. Funny as hell in my book.
