How loyalty to Trump could become the latest wedge threatening to divide Republicans
Washington Examiner ^ | January 20, 2024 | Cami Mondeaux

Former President Donald Trump‘s penchant for punishing GOP detractors is trickling down to Congress as some of his most ardent supporters are using loyalty to the former president as a litmus test for the Republican Party.

Since launching his bid for the 2024 presidential election, Trump has kept a continuous calculation of those who have thrown their support behind him and, more importantly, those who have not. For those who have considered other candidates, the former president has been quick to decry their disloyalty and even vow to make them suffer politically.

“Bob Good won’t be electable when we get done with him,” Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to Trump’s presidential campaign, told the Cardinal News.

That threat is in reference to Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-VA), who threw his support behind Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) last year. The endorsement has angered Trump and his allies, with several falling in line behind the president to target the Virginia Republican.

“Here we have Bob Good, who has doubled down on his endorsement for DeSantis and his clear disdain and hate for President Trump,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a staunch supporter of Trump, told the Washington Examiner. “He doesn’t think President Trump is electable. Bob Good is disloyal, which means you can’t trust him. People need to know this.”

Good brushed off Greene’s comments, arguing that he would rather focus on government spending and securing the border rather than internal disputes.

“I don’t have time to waste commenting on every silly comment made in a House Conference meeting or on Twitter/X,” Good told the Washington Examiner in a statement. “But if members are looking to punish conservatives for trying to keep our promises, good luck keeping a majority.”

You are talking about the primaries. And you are right. Trump will likely run away with the nomination.

Nationally, it would take quite a shift for him to win.

Enjoy the next few months. After that, it will get painful for Trump. And the rest of the party “loyalists” will get sucked down with him.

As far as I can see, FR has already scooted leftward. When loyalty to a person outweighs loyalty to principles, we’re already mired in emotion-driven politics. Only-Trumpers refuse the reality that there’s no such thing as “turns” in politics. If you’re not kow-towing to Trump, you must hate him with a purple passion. There are only extremes in an only-Trumper’s mind, and that’s all too close to how leftists and cultists think.

you blame President Trump for the homosexual agenda…. President Trump was nowhere on the political or religious scene when homosexuality was given legal status..

I don't blame Trump for the entire homosexual agenda, but he did flip flop on the issue after becoming President, which is another example of him pulling the party left.

Ron Duh-Saintis, on his mission to serve Jesus, is a Roman Catholic…. I have yet to hear him rebuke pappy Francis

And Trump has? Do you really want to compare the levels of faith between Trump and DeSantis, as judged by statements and actions?

You accuse me of hate, and idol worship, when it appears to be the other way around.

Excellent analysis. I'm hardly a "neverTrumper" as I've voted for him three times, and will again if the choice is him vs Biden or Obama. I just don't like the blind allegiance that so many are demanding, especially when the primary is still going on, and a more conservative option still exists. If we want conservatism to survive, we should support it. Or at least allow it to exist LOL.

I have yet to see any indication that the gop will not run out the clock on a Trump presidency. It doesn't matter who the president is, the gop is controlled by the establishment chamber of commerce, and corporations.

A lame duck Trump presidency will be stonewalled by the dems, and McConnell has no need or urgency to resolve issues. What will happen, is more spending, and more tax cuts.

Even if a repub is elected president, the massive debt and other fiscal problems will hit full force post election, and those issues will continue the spiral of self sabotage of the US. Trump has already put forth no cuts on entitlements, and that will burn the future. Trump himself has argued for a market correction now, instead of on his watch.

It’s not about winning the election. It’s about insiders settling scores behind the scenes and increasing their own power. Good and LaCivita are both from Virginia. They may have crossed paths in the past, and taking Good’s scalp would help LaCivita’s reputation and business. A disciplined campaign on its way to winning the nomination doesn’t bother with nonsense like this.

The grapes would be sour if “my” candidate lost. I don’t have a candidate. I left the GOP because they were nothing but morons. My vote in MA meant nothing.

The only thing I get out of being on the voter list is jury duty. At some point, you just say, “no more.”

We need to do two things: Stop letting Deep State select our candidates for us and secure our elections.

Until we have "None of the Above" on all ballots at every level, we will continue to have selections, not elections.

FR hasn't moved leftward. These are paid shills advocating that.

We're not. We're living in a harsh reality that the Republican half of the Uniparty colluded with the Democrat half of the Uniparty to steal an election.

The fantasy is that it didn't happen.

I would think anyone with “ principles” would be fighting against the very first illegal wire tape, Russia Russia Russia fantasy, unfounded impeachments, indictments, the never ending unjust law fare, the J6 prisoners and most of all a stolen election…..
That would appear to be a principled person. A person with principles rather than an opinion.

Nah. Trumps immediate issue are the fake persecutions, not anyone hes running against. Trump will win a variety of these trials imho , only increasing his popularity. He will continue to stomp on Haley or Ron and then his only worry will be the second steal. Not sure how he overcomes that.
