It is thought by some that a large comet or asteroid exploded above the Laurentide Ice Sheet in Canada around 12,000 years ago and initiated its break up and melt. This was responsible for causing the Great Lakes and Lake Agassiz, and possibly the creation of the Hudson Valley. This glacial melt, along with the Melt in Scandinavia, may have been responsible for raising sea levels and flooding the Mediterranean Basin and the Black Sea, and creation of the English Channel.

Magnetic Pole reversal does happen and it can be a messy thing that can take a long time. Currently there is an area Called the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly, and Ships compasses do not point at true south. Ships have to compensate to navigate the area.

When we have pole reversal earth's magnetic field can weaken and disappear for a few decades, or we could have 2 or 3 south poles at different places at the same time before it regularized.
