I saw a story yesterday that said he had died of “complications.” The story noted the oddity of that formulation.

It is a sad world we live in, but when a person dies prematurely, not stating the cause of death is now like crime reports that don’t give identifying information about the criminals — which, to be precise, is primarily relevant when the story is about domestic or street crime.

To my mind, the younger the decedent, the more urgent it should seem to the family to get the cause of death on the record if it is not discreditable. Because otherwise we will all assume that it is discreditable. And we will probably be right.
