Agriculture Ping!................
Dirt farming tech.
The cell is the size of a sofa , takes 2-4’unobtanium rods, and generates 0.00001 watts.
yep, already been done!
Cheap Tesla battery replacement
The money quote about the applicability of the “dirt” fuel cell:
“We can use very simple engineered systems to capture their electricity. We’re not going to power entire cities with this energy. But we can capture minute amounts of energy to fuel practical, low-power applications.”
In sum - limited applicability.
“So uhh... where’d you get the dirt?”

certainly limited applicability, but, that means that a battery needs not be used in this application that can be utilized elsewhere.
All caps in the headline. Use of the word “incredible.” Claiming to run on dirt.
After a headline like that I’m not very much inclined to believe anything the article says.
Researchers my foot. Since when did researchers ever invent anything the free market could use. All useful inventions were invented by a hard working entrepreneur building a better mouse trap.
I have to admit that I have had an obsession with human powered generation systems at various times. One year I set up a Christmas tree with LED lights powered by a hand cranked magneto from an antique telephone. Then I made my grandkids crank it to light it up. They loved it for about two minutes then they went back to their cell phones and tablets.
My test on any article based on fantastical claims about tech breakthroughs announcing “too cheap to meter” results:
Do a word search for ‘$’ to see if costs are anywhere stated.
If not, then claims are for amusement purposes only.
Saves me a lot of time.
“An air-cooled fiberglass engine, and it runs on *water*!”
Further Studies Needed. ie. More Grant Money
LOL! That was exactly my image of it.
Another totally useless “study” costing hundreds of thousands of dollars yielding nothing. But they’ll probably get more funding.
Set them up in DC for a perpetual energy supply.

Excellent rule!
“certainly limited applicability, but, that means that a battery needs not be used in this application that can be utilized elsewhere”
Granted, but are you aware that very simple devices can manually crank-out/generate electricity - no battery, no fuel cell. There are radios, cell phones and other devices that use manually cranked out electricity in remote situations the world over. There are even such devices for recharging batteries.
