ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The COVID pandemic forced most U.S. casinos to close for months, causing payrolls, revenue and earnings to tumble.

But the forced shutdowns and highly regulated recoveries also taught the industry useful lessons that will endure even after the pandemic is a distant memory, panelists at a major casino conference said Thursday.

Speaking at the East Coast Gaming Congress, executives from several major regional gambling companies and one of the world’s largest said the changes they were forced to make because of the pandemic had some benefits.

“Don’t call Chris Christie a fat pig.”

Yeah, because that would be an insult to the pig.

I found a decent little Indian buffet locally for $15. None of those delicious dough balls, but the Chicken Tandoori and Naan Bread are a good base.

“there’s no way I’m setting my alarm just to get to McDonald’s before 10:30 a.m”

Here it’s 11 AM but the app ordering and double points for breakfast do stop working at 10:30.

$25 is the cheapest Indian or other Asian buffet around here.

"Here it’s 11 AM but the app ordering and double points for breakfast do stop working at 10:30."

It's 11 a.m. on Sundays here. I'm one of those folks that doesn't use any apps, or does card transactions on my phone. Personally, I believe rewards and points are nothing but gimmicks to get people to go to McDonalds, and since the lock-down and the Biden Admin, people are paying more for the shit they serve. I don't think there's any real benefit to using apps to get points or rewards.

I used to complete surveys online with e-Rewards. Was a member for many years. You'd earn reward money for completing surveys. You could only use the money to buy airline miles, hotel points, store and restaurant gift cards. Last year the company changed hands. In order to be able to continue to earn rewards, you had to complete an online form and submit a photo ID to a third party database. I told them that this wasn't Nazi Germany, and I didn't need to show a photo ID to vote, so I wasn't about to give a third party a copy of my driver's license, the only photo ID I have. And on top of it, the assholes locked my account, and I had to threaten them to send me the money I had left in my account, in the form of a gift card. Last year they also sent out 1099 NEC (Non-employee Compensation) forms that we had to submit with our Federal taxes. So, no rewards horseshit for me ever again.

I remember being able to have a turkey dinner with all the trimmings at Neisner's basement cafeteria, and it only cost $1.00. There was also a drive-thru burger place that had hamburgers for 10 cents. I lived in Rochester, NY. There was a pizza joint a few blocks away. You could get a personal pan pizza for 50 cents. Those were definitely the good old days. Candy bars for 5 cents. Today, you pay more for much less.

We don't have any of those, not even Ponderosa around here. There's a Texas Roadhouse but it's a half-hour away. Most of the good restaurants like Red Robin, Chili's, and others are an hour away. The only time I get to go to Outback Steakhouse is when I visit my son who lives in Troy, NY. He usually comes here to visit his old lady, so we often meet at the Greek restaurant we both like when he comes in, then we both drive our cars back here.

We used to go to the Turning Stone buffet several times a year, but then the food started to get bad. I think it sat out too long and spoiled. Then I worked a while there in surveillance so I just stopped going to any of the stores and restaurants there. It got really ridiculous during covid so I left and never went back. I hear it’s not good anymore anyway. It seems like they are trying to make up for it by becoming the biggest marijuana producer in NY state.

I don’t gamble so the buffet was the only draw to a casino for me

"It got really ridiculous during covid so I left and never went back."

When they re-opened after the lockdown, they briefly had a rule that no one that lived more than 100 miles away could visit. That was bull$hit. I live 15 minutes away, and barely go once a month, and the main reason is to meet friends and have lunch. The Green Emerald restaurant there sucks. And the dining hall isn't any better. It's like a food section at an indoor mall.

We started going to the Upstate Tavern instead because the food is better, but their menu is limited, and you're paying at least $16 for a burger and fries. We take turns buying every other month, but I get gigged because I'm buying for both of them, and myself. I'm grateful I broke my wrist a few weeks ago (dominant hand), and can't eat with that hand. Still have to wear a brace for at least another month, so I saving money by not going there. Good news is, it's their turn to buy next time we meet.

Ace Rothstein: [narrating] The town will never be the same. After the Tangiers, the big corporations took it all over. Today it looks like Disneyland. And while the kids play cardboard pirates, Mommy and Daddy drop the house payments and Junior's college money on the poker slots. In the old days, dealers knew your name, what you drank, what you played. Today, it's like checkin' into an airport. And if you order room service, you're lucky if you get it by Thursday. Today, it's all gone. You get a whale show up with four million in a suitcase, and some twenty-five-year-old hotel school kid is gonna want his Social Security Number. After the Teamsters got knocked out of the box, the corporations tore down practically every one of the old casinos. And where did the money come from to rebuild the pyramids? Junk bonds. But in the end, I wound up right back where I started. I could still pick winners, and I could still make money for all kinds of people back home. And why mess up a good thing? And that's that.

Regards,

I remember when the most expensive buffet in Vegas was the Friday night seafood buffet at the Rio. And it was $35.

Those delicious dough balls (usually in syrup with rose water) are called gulab jamun. (In case anyone cares).
