Growing up, I couldn’t understand why I was born in Louisville, Kentucky. There it was in black and white on my birth certificate, yet it didn’t make any sense. My parents had never lived in Kentucky, we weren’t American and had no family connections to the place whatsoever.
When I asked my mother, she told me she chose Kentucky because it was where her favourite film, Gone With The Wind, was set (it wasn’t) and she always wanted her child to be born in such a romantic location. It’s also why she called me Olivia after one of the film’s stars, Olivia de Havilland.
At the time, I thought this was a beautiful story, like a fairy tale.
Many years later, however, I discovered my mother’s fairy-tale fantasy concealed a devastating truth; I was born in Kentucky because an American surrogate gave birth to me there.
Mere seconds after I was born, I had been rapidly removed from the woman who had become pregnant with me — using her own eggs — and had carried me for nine months. Rather than being placed in my biological mother’s arms to be nurtured and adored, I was handed over to a man and woman who had, put simply, paid an awful lot of money for me.
My birth 31 years ago may have concluded this particular financial transaction, but it was just the beginning of a trauma that I struggle to cope with to this day.
It seems barely a week goes by without a celebrity declaring the birth of a child born via surrogacy, be it Paris Hilton or Khloe Kardashian.

Rent-a-womb is not a good thing for the actual mother and child. It can be a blessing for the long term parents or it may just be a curse to all involved
It’s just a deliberate creation of orphans.
This used to be a tragedy.
Children are not commodities.
You’ll pick your son, pick your daughter too,
From the bottom of a long glass tube..................
Felt this was a bad practice when I became aware of a young lady who was paid $20,000 to birth a child to be bestowed to a gay couple.
That is an incredibly powerful article. And I will say, if affirms the Pope calling for an end to this, which was just in the news the other day.
Didn’t have “OpEd in the Daily Mail affirms Pope Francis’s call to end Surrogate pregnancy worldwide” on my bingo card for January.
I have never really formed an opinion on this practice, but this woman is making a call for a return to the natural order, and that IS what is needed in so many ways right now.
This is an important piece, thanks for posting it.
but The poor writer of this article has to believe that human life has been degraded in every single way and surrogates are just the tip of the evil pyramid...
It is still not nice to fool with Mother Nature. She will eventually get even or ahead. Too bad for the innocents. Wealth has a way of perverting people doesn’t it?
We should stop adoption too then.
Um....because daughters not having a connection with their parents is rare? I’ve got 2 daughters and one wants nothing to do with us. Has nothing to do with surrogacy, though...

Also, many women are victims of this country’s depopulation efforts. So many white middle class women have struggles to become pregnant. These aren’t the abortion loving, late in life women trying to get pregnant either.
She could’ve found out the truth without destroying her relationship with her parents. After all, she was biologically related to her dad. He was her father. She also seems to have this very romantic view of what biological parents are like. Her surrogate parents were likely better than most. Look at her biological mother, for example, disowning her own children.
Now it's been 10,000 years, man has cried a billion tears ..............
(crazy song from back in the day)
Life IS being degraded in every single way.
And in particular, women who "love babies" very often don't love children, teens, or anyone else, at all. Babies are dolls to them, possessions, trophies, toys, something to dress up, something to show off... accessories. The minute that child starts to get a mind of its own, they don't like it anymore, and need a new toy.
She sounds like an ungrateful bitch
“...Why, you might wonder, when my parents went to such lengths to have me, did I not feel showered with love?...”
The answer is that she was basically just another pet. Like a dog or cat, when the owners get tired of caring for animals.
This is what homosexuals do with their pet children. They raise them to become sex slaves.
Adpotion can be blessings from distressed situations for all involved. Adoption is a rescue. Rent a womb is purposeful in creating a human being for selfish reasons, like breeding a cross for a Thoroughbred racehorse, or a dog breeder.
My godson is adopted, and knows from an early age, open adoption. Even knows his cousins. But his Mom and Dad are the ones that raised him up to be a man , and now a good father.
I also know two surrogate children, who were reminded in their teenage years, “you owe us because we paid for you “. Horrible thing to be told.
It’s the attitude of approach that is wrong.
