Use the split peas from the store (get the ones with good color if they are yellowed they are old) and use distilled water.
Ingredients

2 quarts soft water
2 cups Andersen’s Specially Selected Green Split Peas
1 branch celery, coarsely chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon ground dried thyme
1 pinch cayenne
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper
Directions
Boil hard for 20 minutes, then slowly until peas are tender. Strain through fine sieve and reheat to boiling point.

Oh, MY. Such memories. I used to bicycle down the coast of Kalifornia (when it was California). Somewhere near San Luis Obispo were two amazing places. One was an old Fosters Freeze that turned into a great burrito place (major calories for bicycling). The other was a GIANT warehouse full of chickens. You could smell it far away, and nearby the noise so many chickens made was deafening.

A few miles more was Buellton and Solvang, and then the Hearst Castle. We met one guy who had bicycled across a desert (Vegas or Barstow) and was heading South. He had huge plastic containers of water for the desert part of trip. He was apparently alone. I hoped he did not pass on the idiot gene (procreated) that thought alone in the desert was a good idea.

There are parts of U.S. 101 that are very near the coast, and the bicycle route merges with the 101 highway (just a quarter mile or so). The 101 shoulder is very wide, but I still was extra careful. Those idiotic bikers who believe bicycles should always have the right-of-way are Darwin Award candidates. Many times, if any road did not feel safe, I would just get off the bike and walk. Or I would just wait for all the cars to pass. If you break an arm or a leg, doing anything, it will heal. If you break your head, your dead.

looks good thanks

the place was also very attractive (inside as well as out) and thus a bit of a tourist draw. it is a shame that after a century in business it would just wimper out without any notice
