SOUTH WINDSOR — Local Democrats spoke out against a Republican Town Council member who said during a recent meeting that the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, were not an insurrection.
Near the end of the Town Council meeting on Jan. 2, Democrat members Erica Evans and Elizabeth Pendleton discussed the town's then-upcoming United Democracy Day on Jan. 6, an annual event established in 2021 by the previous Democrat majority as a day of remembrance for the riots at the U.S. Capitol.
Evans said she hoped residents and members of the Town Council would join her in reflection of the "insurrection" in Washington, D.C., three years prior.
"The idea of this is we as a community are united and work together," Evans said.
Pendleton said she would also like to say a prayer that day for the lives that were lost, between both law enforcement and protesters.
Republican member Richard Balboni Jr. spoke shortly after Evans and Pendleton to correct what he called "falsehoods" that were stated about the Capitol riots.
"There was no insurrection on Jan. 6, and the only person that died was Ashli Babbitt," Balboni said. "I guess we can call it what we want to call it, but until someone is actually charged with insurrection, there was no insurrection."
On Jan. 3, the day after the meeting, South Windsor Democrats posted on social media in response to Balboni's comments, stating that "substantial evidence" supports the assertion that the Capitol riots were an insurrection, which is defined by Merriam-Webster as "an act or instance of revolting against civil authority or an established government."
"Labeling it as anything other than an insurrection dismisses the severity of the assault on the heart of American democracy," the South Windsor Democrats wrote.
Official social media accounts for the Connecticut Democratic Party posted similar statements on Jan. 6.
Speaking with Hearst Connecticut Media Group on Monday, Balboni said he only disagreed with the labeling of the Capitol riots as an insurrection.
"Anybody that broke the law should have been charged with the appropriate crimes," Balboni said.
Balboni said although there were people who died from medical situations during or after the events of Jan. 6, 2021, including some police officers, the only person who died during the events as a direct cause of a conflict was Babbitt.
"I'm just not going to let them speak lies," Balboni said. "It is my opinion, but it is based in fact."
Balboni said he also objected to bringing "divisive" national politics into Town Council chambers.
Linda Jeski, acting chairwoman of South Windsor's Democratic Town Committee, said Monday that it is "outrageous and irresponsible" to label the events of Jan. 6, 2021, as anything other than an insurrection.
"He is being disrespectful to law enforcement who gave their lives and battled protesters that day," Jeski said. "Balboni has been elected to the Town Council to serve the people of South Windsor, and his personal beliefs on the matter have no place at a Town Council meeting."

Wasn’t a woman trampled or beaten to death in a tunnel area? I read that back at the time. Was that not true? Only asking because I thought more than one demonstrator was killed.
