WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Jan. 5.

AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSCRIPTION LAW.

No less than twenty-five different propositions to amend the Conscription Law were submitted in the Senate to-day. The bill before its Military Committee has the approval of the Secretary of War and Provost-Marshal-General. It will retain the three hundred commutation clause, and among other things borrowed from the French system, such as the requirement that the conscript shall be responsible for his substitute's service and fitness.

SALES OF LANDS FOR UNPAID TAXES IN INSURRECTIONARY DISTRICTS.

The United States Tax Commissioner for the District of Virginia will offer for sale at public auction, at their office, corner Prince and Washington streets, in the City of Alexandria, Va., on the 11th day of January, 1864, thirty-nine pieces of property, consisting of houses and lots in Alexandria; several farms in that vicinity, among which is the Arlington estate, lately occupied by ROBERT E. LEE. On the 19th day of January, 1864, they will offer, at the same place, 41 houses and lots, situated in the City of Alexandria. On the 29th day of January they will offer, at the same place, 47 houses and lots in the City of Alexandria. On the 1st day of February next they will offer, at the same place, 48 houses and lots in Alexandria, and several large farms from one to six miles from the city. No immediate title can be acquired to these properties, as the privilege of redemption is conferred by law upon loyal persons interested in them, who shall substantiate their claims under the Act of Confiscation at any time within two years.

THE INTERIOR DEPARTMENT.

A motion will be made in the House soon after its reassembly for a special committee to investigate the affairs of the Interior Department.

The New York Times was also a major supporter of the U.S. entering World War 1, at the behest of the British.

Not allowing the Southern states to peacefully secede, and U.S. involvement in World War 1, were both completely insane.

We’re still paying a huge price for those terrible wars.
