In the USA of today, we must all speak in code.
The unspoken part of this analysis is that ghetto/urban stores, where theft is a huge problem, will change back, put products behind plexiglass, or simply shut down.
Other areas will probably stay the same.
Self-checkout in my little town, which has different demographics, is here to stay. I simply can not see our local grocery hiring back 6 staff to manage each check-out line if its not needed.
I keep wondering why Walmart (and other retailers) have self-checkout counters, but need to have employees to help people using those counters and to clean them. Seems self-defeating for the companies involved.
I wish more stores would implement Scan-and-Go.
The cost of labor should be between the employer and employee. Let the “invincible hand” of Adam Smith determine labor cost and service will return. Unfortunately we are today operating in a corrupt system where the government sets the cost of labor which is often much higher then some employees bring to the business. Result higher prices, lower service.
The United States has moved a long ways from being a capitalist nation. We are now a semi-socialist nation where the Federal Government controls the economy. Unfortunately for our nation (and the world) governments can not effectively control the economy they can only make things worse. At some point the house of cards will collapse.
Good, I hate these things. Yet one is basically forced to use them due to lack of cashiers. Every day I don’t go buy a sledgehammer and smash one is a good day.
I will not use self checkout except when all the human cashiers are wearing masks. I reject masking at a higher level than I reject self checkouts. If there is a human cashier without a mask on, that cashier will get preference over a masked cashier.
I disagree. I generally see one employee per 4-6 self checkout stands. I only go to self checkout regardless of how much I’m buying. I really enjoy the process.
I use them all the time, and if there is a heavy item an employee usually comes over to scan it with his/her handheld scanner.
Considering the number of rude people who ignore the limit in the express lanes, I find self-check out to be faster.
If it’s a big order, or the store is not busy, which is when I always try to shop, OI like the checkout.
I enjoy self-checkout - it’s much faster, lines (if any) are shorter and I get out the door more quickly. Leave it to the thieves and their left-wing enablers to screw that up too.
It is going to be a mix going forward, with a few stores being human only.
We had a Walmart Marketplace (just groceries) that tried to go all self checkout. It lasted maybe six months. Word is that sales dropped off over 25%. Some people just refuse to self checkout.
Locally (NM) our stores really try to push self checkout with only two or three cashiers open with about a dozen self checkouts available. We recently traveled to Texas and shopped at H.E.B. Love that store. While they do have maybe half a dozen self check outs, they had a good 8 cashiers open as well.
I love self checkout, since I don’t have to deal with stupid, tattooed cashiers.
I would be very happy if slow people yakking on their cellphones were not allowed to self checkout
....’Self-checkout is doomed’....
GOOD!
Self checkout is fine... I use my charge card for the purchases. No problems for me.
They can spin this all they like, the reality is its being scapped due to theft, period.
6-8 checkouts with 1-2 people working them does not equate it doesn’t save labor.. it does.. but theft is far higher with self checkout so those losses equate to several more employees worth of salaries.
So they can spin it all they like, but the real reason isn’t they want to provide better service, its that they are having too much theft at the self checkout lines.
Lock down self check out, but shop lifting is in a Full On Green Lignt for a Go.
Heard someting interesting. I was informed that items on the shelf at a Walmart, are actually still property of the vendor.
It is not until you actually Scan & “buy” thje item, is whem it then becomes property of Walmart.
Local cops are not responding to Walmart shoplifting complaints dince if an item is shoplifted, its not actualy property of Walmart, so Walmart cant actually charge anyone with shoplifting/
Is this correct???
I noticed our local Walmart, despite the 20 or so self check-outs, is staffing more checkers. Lowes on the other hand rarely staffs any checkers except at the contractor door. Unless you want to stand behind a contractor with a giant order, you have to do self check.
From a security standpoint, what’s happened is the retailers with self-checkout have had to add employees, whether it’s security or other employees to help people at self-checkout.
Duh. The self-checkout terminals don't work. Of course you need people to help.
By "help" I mean "act like it is the customer's fault that the terminal doesn't work" or "act like the customer is trying to steal."
