I can’t believe I never understood this before. I thought (probably because I grew up Catholic) that people innately knew what was right and wrong. Isn’t there a Bible verse about that God’s law is written in our hearts?

Well, against that there's Proverbs 13.24.

There is. Humans know deep inside when they are doing something wrong and when We have failed to do what we ought.
Knowledge of the Law, however, does not prevent us from willfully disobeying it and coming up with excuses for that defiance. We know we defy the Law but our own ambitions egos mislead us into thinking God doesn’t exist or isn’t watching, doesn’t care. We can at least at first think up a million reasons why our sin is either excusable, or why we won’t be held accountable (because we like to believe we are “really good people.”)
