Russia has yet to comment on a swirl of unconfirmed rumours that Vladimir Putin's top war commander General Valery Gerasimov was killed in a strike on a military command post in Crimea on Thursday.
An explosion and a trail of smoke were visible in a clip of a suspected Storm Shadow strike at the military site in Yukharin Balka. Another target in the village of Uyutnoye, near Yevpatoria was also reportedly hit.
A flow of ambulances was reported by Ukrainian sources at both locations, and Putin-appointed Sevastopol governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said: 'It was the most massive [attack] in recent times.'
Gerasimov has not been seen since December 29 when footage showed him presenting awards to 'military personnel who distinguished themselves during the liberation of Marinka' in occupied Donetsk region, Ukraine.

I think he may take it and perhaps use it as a bargaining chip. 17% of Odessa’s population is ethnic Russian and Russia occupying it gives them a gateway to protect the ethnic Russians in Transnistria, so that is another reason he might want to go there. Depends on how long this war goes on and whether Putin thinks it worth it. Though I think Putin would just as soon end it sooner rather than later because of the casualties and damage that is occurring with its continuation.
does the army have females wear a male tie or is it optional somehow???
Nice to dream but I doubt Garasimov is dead. That would be an incredible stroke of luck. And let’s face it, Garasimov would not go anywhere near the front.
This story is gaining traction. I’d say it’s now likely that Gerasimov was killed in the attack.
Ruzzia is usually quick to issue denials but this time around not so much.
There was some confusion this morning about whether the attack was on a command post near Sevastopol or a command post near Yevpatoria and now it appears that both command posts were targeted in the attack. And at the same time.
This suggests that the attack was intended to kill Gerasimov. Reports from Russian Telegram mostly say twenty-three senior officers and or including five high ranking officers were killed in the simultaneous attacks.
A Telegram poster called “волк-доктор” (Wolf Doctor) said there were multiple waves of attacks. The first attacks may have been intended to cause the senior officers to gather where they were killed in the last series of attacks.
I saw a report yesterday that it was a different General Gerasimov that was killed in the strike, but there still is confusion on the Russian side about the identities of the dead officers.
Which is why I say “likely” at this point. Initial reports from all sides tend to be skewed and sometimes utterly false. Give some time for the nonsense to shake out and what’s left is usually closer to the truth.
Russia has clamped down on Telegram reporting from Russian war bloggers in Crimea and occupied Kherson over the past 2 months. Even sending some of the bloggers to the front. So not as much reporting as before.
yup, only Army had a regular tie on...
