Woman nearly falls off cliff while hiking: 'She thought she was going to die'

A 46-year-old woman from South Glens Falls nearly fell off a cliff while hiking in the Town of North Hudson after slipping off the summit of South Dix Mountain around 5:30 p.m. on December 26, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The woman slid down hundreds of feet of steep snow and a rockslide before grabbing onto a tree to prevent falling off a vertical cliff face, the DEC said.

According to the DEC, it was pouring rain, and there was deep snow and slippery ice at the time of the incident, which could've led to hypothermia among other physical injuries.

Forest Ranger Jamison Martin was alerted that the hiker slipped off the mountain around 5:30 p.m., but he wasn't able to reach her until about 1:30 a.m.

"She, quite honestly, thought she was going to die up there," Ranger Martin said. "I mean she was cliffed out. She slid down a good stretch of steep snow, hit a rock slab and continued to slide. She was hundreds of feet down and basically grabbed a small tree that kept her from going over a vertical cliff face, so she was just petrified to move in any direction... She basically felt like she was totally stuck."

Ranger Martin, with the help of Ranger Lewis, gave the hiker warm liquids, food and dry clothing. They reached her vehicle around 6:30 a.m.

“...A 46-year-old woman from South Glens Falls nearly fell off a cliff while hiking...”

What is with all these hiking morons falling all the time? Haven’t they heard of cars or even bicycles to get from point A to point B? It seems they are forever falling off heights, drowning in a boiling Yellowstone cauldron, being eaten alive by grizzlies, attacked by a serial killer or whatever other hideous demise they may blunder into.

Smart gear to carry. My wife bought me a Garmin satellite beacon for Christmas. Should be handy.

Rain on ice is really slick. Standing on a flat surface is next to impossible.

Why do you have to drive? The same Democrats who don’t want you to hike, don’t want you to drive.

Mount Baldy near Los Angeles can develop ice chutes and maybe once a year a hiker will step on one and fall hundreds of feet to their death.

One of my neighbors was trying to rescue a Cub Scout who had wandered off trail, and while doing so he stepped on a chute and was killed.

Have to drive...

How many people have gone on nonessential errands to wind up dead in a traffic accident? Lots.

It was Amateur Hour in upstate New York's Adirondacks.

"Ranger Martin, with the help of Ranger Lewis, gave the hiker warm liquids, food and dry clothing."

Were the park rangers charged with sexual assault or a hate crime?(sarc)( Guess she wasn't a lefty)

Her name? Hope Lloyd. A very lucky 46 year old woman.

When I was a lot younger and living in western Oregon, I’d hike in rain or snow because it was either that or stay indoors all winter. Once I climbed Mt. Hood in January.

Now I’m in southern Arizona where the summer sun is the enemy, and I get out a lot more in the winter, generally carrying a shotgun since quail season runs during those months. But I’ll stay home when it’s raining.

“it was pouring rain, and there was deep snow and slippery ice.”

That’s not the time to hike: That’s the time to fort up. Weather can sneak up on you when you are in the great outdoors, and your first priority under those conditions is SHELTER! It is NOT continue to hike under such adverse conditions.

That happened to a schoolmate of mine.

I hike to forage for mushrooms and other wild edibles. Over the past year almost 100 lbs of choice edibles.
