DEPARTMENT OF THE SOUTH: Sharp Fight Between a Rebel Battery and the Gunboat Marblehead; A Portion of Our Land Forces Engaged (1/3/1864)

By the arrival of the Arago, HENRY A. GADS- DIN commanding, at this port, yesterday, we have received intelligence giving the details of a skirmish which took place at Legreeville, on the 25th of December. The gunboat Marblehead, while on a reconnoissance up Stono River, was fired upon from a rebel battery situated in the rear of Legreeville. The battery mounted eight pieces, and had been masked until that time. The gunboat replied vigorously, but having been pierced with thirty-two shot was compelled to call upon the assistance of the land forces to disperse the rebels and seize the battery. Three men were killed and five wounded on the gunboat.

A regiment doing duty on Cole’s Island passed over to Legreeville, and after a brief skirmish succeeded in driving off the rebels and capturing four pieces of cannon. The rebels took with them the remaining pieces.

This is the first instance, for a long period, that anything approaching a fight has occurred on the Stono. It was believed that the enemy was engaged in some mischief, and for the purpose of ascertaining, if possible, what was going on, the reconnoissance referred to was ordered. The Marblehead has been stationed in the Stono, at a point below Legreeville, for some months past. The whole affair was of short duration, and since then nothing in the way of skirmishing has taken place.

GILLMORE, one day last week, opened a heavy fire on the City of Charleston, and caused flames to appear simultaneously in seven different places. The destruction of the city is gradually taking place.
