An off-duty cop has been shot dead over $83.45 worth of stolen beer when he confronted three suspects robbing a convenience store.
Sergeant Philip Dale Nix saw the trio shoplifting from a Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Saturday.
He was allegedly gunned down by Jamere Justice Foster, 18, and died in hospital despite the efforts of a second off-duty policeman and a paramedic.
'He was a loving husband, father, son and brother with 22 years of service to the department and this community,' Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson said.
'We ask for prayers for the family of the fallen officer and our Greensboro PD family.'
Foster was charged with felony first-degree murder, misdemeanor larceny and conspiracy.
John Walter Morrison, 28, was charged with misdemeanor larceny, conspiracy and felony accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
Both are held without bail.
Zquriah Lepearce Blackwell, 18, was charged with felony accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and was held on a $500,000 bond.
A warrant for her arrested accused her of helping Foster escape after he allegedly shot Nix, and encouraging him to dispose of the gun and getaway car's license plate.

You just can’t do that, not even with a conventional trial and the usual wad of appeals. What we must consider is how to prevent this again, which involves racial justice. They cannot be sentenced to death if the number of their race on death row is disproportionate to the racist privileged white people on death row.
We must show compassion and pardon these poor discriminated against people.
