Outlook Problem: "The linked image cannot be displayed."

Posted on 01/01/2024 11:05:09 AM PST by ducttape45

Good afternoon fellow Freepers. I got a doozy of a problem I'm hoping that someone has a fix for. It seems that Microsoft Outlook, no matter the version (and I have 2010, 2016 and 2019), won't download remote content anymore.

Thunderbird will, but Outlook will not.

Every time I get an email with an image, I get an error message that says, "The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed or deleted. Verify that the link points to the......"

I have been all over the internet, used three different search engines, and all of the supposed remedies do not work. I've been at it since last night. I'm hoping that maybe someone here has encountered the same problem and has a remedy that works. What kills me is that Thunderbird works just fine, no problems, but Outlook is the bugger that is giving me fits.

If anyone has a way to fix this, please, I'm all ears. Thanks for your time.

This dude tries two methods - the second method starts at around 50 seconds.

Thunderbird will, but Outlook will not.

Ditch the one that's not working.

Yep, tried that one too. Didn’t work.

I have been using Thunderbird for quite some time because of this problem, but it’s become that itch that I have to scratch. Surely there is a fix for this problem and I gotta find it! Argh!

I think the registry edit that kiryandil suggested is probably the answer.

I tried that. BlockHTTPimages is nowhere in my registry.

Delete Outlook and reinstall.

Sorry for your trouble.

I have all the same updates that you have, but no problems.

Microsoft does have a pay Help Desk.

If you tell them the cause is an update, they might waive the fee the entirely.

I solved your problem.

When the banner text message appears ("Click here to view in browser"), click on it.

You will NOT go straight to your browser.

Instead, a new menu comes up.

First choice is Download Pictures - click it.

Your pictures come right up - in Outlook.

The banner text used to be optional, to protect your privacy, in case other people can see your screen.

Sounds like MSFT made the former option permanent.

If you double click an email, Outlook displays it as a full page, in Outlook - in case you do not know that.
