Newly-released bodycam footage shows the moment an LA Sheriff's Deputy shot a mother who had called 911 after her ex-boyfriend allegedly attacked her and her daughter.
Niani Finlayson, 27, called police and 'reported that her boyfriend would not leave her alone' and then screaming and sounds of a struggle could be heard', the LA Sheriff's Department (LASD) said.
Footage shows deputies swiftly approaching the apartment complex and soon saw Finlayson holding an eight-inch kitchen knife at the door.
She reportedly told the officers that she was going to stab her ex-boyfriend for allegedly hurting her nine-year-old daughter, Xaisha.
Xaisha was seen standing next to her and appeared to tell deputies that her mother's ex-boyfriend had hurt her.
While entering the apartment, Deputy Ty Shelton is seen asking the officer in front of him for her taser, which she quickly hands over.
The female officer and Shelton enter the apartment together and see Xaisha standing near the kitchen while Finlayson is standing next to her ex-boyfriend, with one hand on him and the other holding the knife.
At that moment, Shelton shoots four times while holding the taser in another hand, and Finlayson immediately falls to the floor.
Once her mother is shot, Xaisha runs to the kitchen while the ex-boyfriend yells 'No, no, why did you shoot?'.
Shelton is heard responding: 'Drop it'. It is unknown what he was referencing.

“Demanding technical proficiency from those with a badge and gun is not hate.”
Competency.
LEO’s are just like everyone else. They want to go home to their families when they get off duty. Unfortunately, many of them don’t after being sent on a domestic violence call. The taxpayers have paid big bucks to send many idiots to “college” to become “social workers.” This is their job. They should be sent on domestic violence calls, not the police. JMO.
Yes the cop was right no telling who else would be stabbed.
You don’t listen to a cops orders you just tossed you dare coin down.
Four times??? Man, I thought the civil limit was only two times!
The video I saw clearly shows her hand extended.. and what appears to be a person standing next to her falling to the ground to the right as you watch..also with her hand extended. I replayed it several times and clearly she is next to someone that falls to the floor while her hand is extended…my 2 cents

Cop should have just shot the abusive boyfriend; the mother would have dropped her knife and started wailing about the cops. /s
Seriously though, people have to be smart enough, and in control of themselves enough, to appear non-threatening once police arrive. In many situations like this one, officers arriving on scene seem to have been given minimal or even inaccurate information by dispatchers. If told little more than “report of domestic violence with threats” cops are going to assume the person holding a large knife to someone while uttering death threats, IS the problem.
This story could easily have been “Racist police do nothing while woman stabs boyfriend to death”.
Reading between the lines, this sounds like an other cases of the officer mixing up his service firearm with his Taser.
Its happened two or three other times.
I recall reading years ago that adding more women to police forces was haled as a step toward kinder, gentler policing. It turned out that women, lacking the physical strength to subdue a perp, were more likely to resort to lethal force.
“While they are waiving and saying hi in the back of their minds you are still an immediate threat and they are at the ready and figuring on how long it will take them to draw and fire on you.”
When I go out I consider everyone a threat. I sit with my back to a wall in a restaurant or with a clear view. My friends do the same and if we’re together somewhere the one with the view will just say I got your back.
Situational awareness is key to survival and I/we can respond accordingly.
Whats the difference?
They stop shooting when you stop moving.
” the cop chose the most lethal one.”
It will come out that the officer fired the wrong weapon. Right hand, left hand; left brain, right brain.
After watching the video, I retract my former comment.
1. No one in their right mind would be police at this juncture,
2. Working police are not in their right mind.
Roger that. Police from revolver days here.
“...but untill yih have another officer on scene as backup..”
There were at least two at this particular scene.
I watched the video. Anyone commenting without watching the video should STFU.
Righteous shoot.
The officer must have missed the day of training where they were taught to shoot knives out of suspects hands. /s
FOUR TIMES? SO WHAT? If the decision is made to take lethal action, it is to KILL the person not wound them. They don’t shoot to wound. “CENTER MASS” where all the vitals are.
They don’t shoot them in the foot!
Anyone reading/watching this story is biased. You have information that the officers did not have. They have to make life and death decisions in a split second.
The officer wasn’t defending themselves, they were “protecting” the boyfriend from an out of control woman with a yuge knife about to stab him. She had already stated that she was about to stab him. She had him in a corner, pulling him toward her, with the knife perfectly positioned to stab him.
Was the officer supposed to just let her stab him?
In “hindsight”... THERE IS NO SUCH THING!
Officers have to act/react instantly in life and death situations. They rely on their training to do the right thing at the right time. Second guessing can get you or someone else KILLED!
21 feet if a man is holding the knife and might come at you. The officer was not threatened.
Probably, like the FBI & Capital Police, it is a sure road to promotions...
-She told the police she was going to kill her husband
-She was standing with her hand on her husband and a large knife in her hand.
That sounds like a deadly situation.
