“Sporting rifle” is a nod to the language of the Gun Control Act of ‘68.
Need to drag all the idiots to the range. Let ‘m shoot an AR all day long, then hand them a Stoner 63 and tell them “Now this is an assault weapon!”
I understand…I suspect you know far more about this than I do in any case…:)
bkmk
She’s probably a proponent of the “do something” approach to gun control. It requires neither knowledge nor an attempt to acquire knowledge.
I assume you mean the semiauto M1A version of the M-14. I have one too. Springfield Armory National Match Loaded.
Lol…I saw Mtnclimber mention Garand Thumb…I’ll bet it doesn’t compare with Band Aid Thumb!
Oooooooowwww!
Once they learn that they can accessorize, they’re sold.
Until about 18 months ago, I never owned an AR of any caliber. One day I discovered the platform can support a huge variety of calibers other than 5.56x45 NATO (aka .223). But the fact that .223 is so widespread, I decided to build one.
Mine looks like a hunting rifle and is heavy. That is because that is what I built it for. It has a heavy 18” 1:8 rifling 5.56x45mm NATO barrel without a bunch of machining on the barrel taper. It does not have a carrying handle. I built a maple stock for it, it is a natural blond color. smile. It does not have a bird cage on the barrel.
Now the important thing about it, is how I load for it. I shoot semi Spitzer 70 gr SP bullets (not the normal 55gr FMJ). And the charge I use is a bit more than normal.
So, it is certainly a hunting rifle. It will easily kill a white tail deer, or wild hog. (it is legal to hunt deer in Texas with .223)
It is one of a kind, that suits me.
Most people don’t know that there are 2 30 caliber cartridges that can operate on the AR15 platform. 7.62x39 (as in AK) and 300 Blackout. All that is needed to change is a new upper assembly, 2 pins hold it in place.
Am I in love with the AR15, no. I really prefer 30 caliber or larger. For many reason.
”Scarieness” is an easy sell for anyone inclined to emotional decision-making (most gun-control types), but I think the popularity, and sheer numbers of AR-type weapons in circulation is what really gets under the lefties’ skin.
Semi-auto rifles have been around since 1903. YES, 1903. Yet they only began to be used in mass killings after the mental hospitals were closed down in the 1970s when the patients were dumped on the streets.
And what the news media and TV shows made popular at the times is what criminals thought they had to use for their crimes. Remember the “evil” SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIALS! then the 5 shot bolt action Army Surplus Rifles!(they got a ban on them) then “COP KILLER BULLETS!” then UZIs and AK-47s! Then the AR-15!
The political plan is to try and make some type of gun ban “stick” then use that ban to build on to go after their real target of the 1960s, HANDGUNS!
Remember the attempted gun bans of the past...
Starting in 1962 with the demand of Dems Thomas J. Dodd and Emanuel Celler...
1962 We ONLY want to register handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1964, We ONLY want to register ALL firearms, not ban them.
1968 We ONLY want to register all guns, and ban the import of foreign Saturday Night Specials, and 5-shot bolt action army surplus rifles! (they got the ban).
1970, We ONLY want to ban small American handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
In 1976, the founder of handgun Control Inc told in a New Yorker interview his goal was to make ownership of handguns “TOTALLY ILLEGAL”.
1976 We ONLY want to ban ALL handguns! Rifles will not be affected!
1981, Actress Lee Grant on Good Morning America screams and pokes holes in the air with her finger...”THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”
1984, They came for the rifles.
Once they thought they had a “ban” on semi-auto rifles” they immediately started after the single shot .50 Cal rifles.
Gun owners know they are always up against a stacked deck.
****ARs do not fire a “high-powered” cartridge. The .223/5.56 NATO cartridge is intermediate power, useful in hunting animals the size of coyotes.***
The original .223 was listed as the.222 Remington Special varmint cartridge that fell between the.222 Remington and the .222 Remington Magnum. Far below then 30-06 and .308 Nato.
Thanks…from what I learned, it isn’t as simple as just modifying one little piece or drilling one hole, it is multiple components that need modification.
It was interesting to know about the reverse conversions, too…
***The left’s demands regarding the AR-15 boil down to “big scary gun”. ***
I remember not long ago a gun-ban organization showed a photo of the semi-auto they wanted to ban. Someone pointed out it was actually a bolt action rifle with a fancy plastic-metal stock. Now lever action rifles have a similar scary stock.
I remember back in the late 1970s when some detective show on TV when an assassin was handed an old AR-15 with a BIG SCOPE on it. It was enough to frighten anyone who did not know what it was. I had a feeling the anti-gun radicals would go after them next. They did in the 1980s.
They try to outlaw AR’s because they have a scary shape.
The introduction of the .350 Legend cartridge expands the hunting potential of the AR platform into areas where lefties had made inroads into restrictions on hunting weapons due to safety concerns.
***Not long ago I engaged a woman in conversation***
I did the same with an old woman in 1968 when all gun registration was being pushed. She was all for it because the TV shows and news show were in favor of it.
Years later I found the US Congress,in 1941, rejected any gun registration schemes because the nazis were using it to collect firearms under threats of execution in occupied France.
Today I suggest people inventory their firearms and see which ones have a paper trail back to them and immediately trade them off! I wish I had back those I bought before Dec of 1968. (Yes, I am that old.)
