Day 667: Dec 22
Today, the biggest news comes from the Kherson region.
Here, Ukrainian forces conducted a successful aerial ambush and destroyed multiple Russian fighter bombers. Such an ambush was just a matter of time because the concentration of Russian aviation in this region was extremely high lately. Both Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that the main weapon of the Russian forces against the Ukrainian bridgeheads on the eastern bank of the river were air-dropped bombs because virtually all Russian ground operations on the islands were suicidal – Russians were killed from tanks, mortars, and artillery from the high western bank.
The Russian bombs themselves have very low efficiency because of their low accuracy. However, after Russians started to increase the number of bombs dropped per day and on some days dropped up to 100 bombs, the Ukrainian command understood that they needed to come up with something that would discourage Russians from conducting these airstrikes.
The task was not easy, as Russians are dropping these bombs around 50 km from the front line, so regular air defense like “Buk-M1” cannot reach Russian aircraft. The good news is that to launch their bombs so far from the target, Russians necessarily need to operate at very high altitudes, reaching more than 12 kilometers. At such high altitudes, the geography of the region simply cannot impede any radars from detecting and tracking the target.
Luckily, Ukrainians also have several Patriot air defense systems that are capable of dealing with this problem. When it comes to intercepting targets at such high altitudes, the Patriot system has an effective range of up to 160 km, which means that Ukrainians could put one launcher 100 km away from the front line and still reach Russian aircraft.
Russian sources reported that today they tried to conduct an airstrike on Krynky with 3 Su-34 aircraft, which are capable of dropping 18 bombs in total, however, something went terribly wrong. According to Russian sources, before the Russians were even ready to drop their bombs, the jets’ warning radar went off, signaling that the jet was locked as a target. Russian sources added that there was not enough time to get out of the range. As a result, all 3 fighter bombers were successfully destroyed. One crew managed to survive, while other crews did not.
Later, Russian analysts reported the Russian radar warning system did not help because Ukrainians purposefully kept their Patriot radars inactive. Russians analysts speculated that the only way to make this work was to put a small radar with a short range near the front line, keep this radar active all the time, and when it detects the Russians jets and the Russian radar warning goes off, the radar does not save them because Russians are deep inside the trap, and then Ukrainians can activate the powerful Patriot radar, lock the target, and destroy the aircraft.
Russian analysts concluded that such an outcome was just a matter of time because Russians were using aviation in the Kherson region too extensively. A Ukrainian fighter reported today that the Russian command was expecting this as well, and they actually tried to prepare for it. He said that Russians developed a theory that Ukrainians masked Patriot systems as postal service trucks, which is why Russians conducted several strikes on Ukrainian postal infrastructure. Unfortunately for Russians, the real Patriot systems remained intact.
To add insult to injury, Ukrainians conducted a series of airstrikes on the Russian side of the river with JDAM bombs. Recently released footage shows how 6 bombs land on 3 different Russian warehouses in the region. The video also shows 2 Russian Su-25 that tried to intercept the bombs, however, the attempts were unsuccessful. It turned out that Ukrainian fighters from the 140th Brigade, who were responsible for the JDAM strikes, also conducted a series of HIMARS strikes. The targets became Russian forces concentrations, such as a battery of long-range multiple-launch rocket systems, armored fighting vehicles, and Russian camps with personnel concentrations.

Grateful to our soldiers who destroyed three Russian Sukhoi aircraft at once. In the South – in our Kherson region. It’s the gain of our Air Force and the direct action of the Odesa Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade. Thank you, guys! And may every Russian pilot be well aware of our response to every Russian killer – none of them will go unpunished.
The second for today.
I greeted two of our very significant professional communities today on their professional days – Ukrainian energy workers and Ukrainian diplomats. There are special days in the calendar: December 22 is the Power Engineer’s Day and the Diplomatic Service Day of Ukraine.
In the morning, I honored power engineers with state awards – individuals whose efforts enable Ukraine to live normally, with light and heating. We are currently experiencing the second winter of full-scale war, significantly different from the first. It is the result of the tremendous effort of many teams, companies, officials, and regional authorities. I am grateful to everyone working for our energy sector.
Today, I also met with representatives of our diplomatic community – those within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs system and those outside the system involved in our country’s foreign policy. This year was ambitious for Ukraine, and we managed to implement most of our ambitions in relations with our partners. For the next year, there are clear goals and well-defined KPIs for all employees in Ukraine’s diplomatic sphere.
I spoke today with Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The Netherlands is preparing to send the first F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. From political decisions regarding the provision of aircraft, we have moved on to training pilots and engineers, and now we are implementing the technical part – the actual delivery of F-16 jets. I am grateful to the Netherlands and all our other partners who support us in this endeavor.
Certainly, we discussed the current political issues with Mark, including the approval of a new support package for Ukraine in the European Union – EUR 50 billion, a necessary and long-term package. This is our resilience. Additionally, we managed to discuss the preparation for a new Peace Formula meeting.
Today, I also met with the recently appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Sikorski. We are refreshing our relations. We discussed how we can overcome existing concerns. Of course, I expressed gratitude to Poland for supporting our state in the defense sector. We have significant opportunities for further collaboration – work that will bolster both our nations. This includes, in particular, joint defense production. Many things need to be resolved. I am confident we can do it.
Another thing. I held a meeting with the Minister of Defense and the team. We are preparing solutions to the issues that our units, combat brigades are facing. Matters of motivation, terms of service determination, and recruitment. The defense forces are sustained by people. And people are the spirit and the weapon. We must ensure both components. Thanks to everyone who is assisting!

Day 667 of the russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine continues.
The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, launches strikes, and shells both military and civilian targets. As weather conditions improved, the enemy intensified the use of tactical aviation and FPV quadcopters. The adversary continues to conduct active assault operations with the support of armored vehicles. The enemy increased the number of air strikes and artillery shelling.
During the day of December 22, there were 60 combat engagements. The enemy launched 1 missile and 33 air strikes, launched 23 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the russian terrorist attacks have wounded civilians. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.
The operational situation in the east and the south of Ukraine remains difficult.
VOLYN and POLISSYA AXIS: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA AXIS: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. The invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Kostobobriv (Chernihiv oblast). Around 20 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Klyusy, Karpovychi, Leonivka (Chernihiv oblast), Volfyne, Basivka, Zapsillya (Sumy oblast), Udy, Veterynarne, Vovchansk, Mala Vovcha, Zemlyanky, Topoli (Kharkiv oblast).
KUPYANSK AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 8 attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka (Kharkiv oblast). In that area, the enemy used air support in attempts to break through the defenses of Ukrainian troops. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).
LYMAN AXIS: the adversary conducted no offensives. The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebryanka, Verkhniokamyanske, Spirne, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).
BAKHMUT AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 8 attacks of the adversary near Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka and Andriyivka (Donetsk oblast). Also, the adversary launched air strikes in the vicinities of Katerynivka and Toretsk (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Vasyukivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka, Andriyivka, New York (Donetsk oblast).
AVDIYIVKA AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 17 enemy attacks east of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiyivka, and 16 more attacks in the vicinities of Pervomaiske and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast). The invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Lastochkyne settlement (Donetsk oblast). The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Keramik, Novobakhmutivka, Berdychi, Lastochkyne, Yasnobrodivka, Netailove (Donetsk oblast).
MARYINKA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Maryinka and Pobjeda (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the adversary, with air support, launched 4 unsuccessful attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders. Also, the occupiers launched air strikes near Heorhiyivka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). The settlements of Oleksandropil, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiyivka, Pobjeda, Kostyantynivka, Katerynivka were under artillery and mortar fire from the occupiers.
SHAKHTARSKE AXIS: Ukrainian defenders repelled an enemy attack west of Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast). The adversary fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Bohoyavlenka, Prechystivka, Prechystivka, Blahodatne, Rivnopil(Donetsk oblast).
ZAPORIZHZHIA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled all adversary attacks west of Verbove and Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). In that area, the adversary made attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. The invaders launched air strikes in the vicinities of Robotyne and Orikhiv (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Around 2 settlements, including Levadne, Hulyaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Mali Shcherbaky, Kamyanske (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
ODESA operational-strategic group, KHERSON AXIS: the adversary fired artillery at the city of Kherson and the settlements of Lvove, Tyahynka, Ivanivka (Kherson oblast), as well as the city of Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast). Also, the invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Krynky (Kherson oblast).
The enemy did not abandon his intention to drive our units from the left bank of the Dnipro, made 17 failed assaults. The attacks were repelled and the enemy retreated having suffered major losses. The Ukrainian troops are holding the line, continuing to retain their positions and firing for effect on the enemy.
During the day of December 22, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 12 concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment of the adversary. Also, Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 3 Su-34 fighter-bombers.
The Ukrainian missile troops hit 4 concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 1 ammunition depot and 2 command posts of the russian invaders.

Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russian forces on Saturday (December 17) in the eastern Donetsk region praised their Swedish-made self-propelled howitzer. The howitzer could be quickly deployed, is accurate, reliable and can fire 21 shots in less than three minutes, according to Ruslan, Ukrainian artilleryman operating on Archer.
Sweden’s Ministry of Defense says eight of the Archer self-propelled howitzers were provided to Ukraine earlier this year. Kyiv largely relies on Western military aid as its troops clash with Russian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland Radosław Sikorski, who is visiting our country.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored the importance of the first visit of the newly appointed head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland to our state.
The Head of the State expressed gratitude for the substantial support of Ukraine by Poland in countering the full-scale Russian invasion and providing refuge to Ukrainian citizens who sought safety from hostilities.
The interlocutors agreed that bilateral relations should find fresh impetus, and all areas of concern should be settled with mutual trust and respect.
“We hope for the opening of a new page in our relations. We are very strong neighbors with a shared history. We are glad to see you here. I hope that the Prime Minister of Poland will also visit Ukraine at the earliest opportunity,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The President of Ukraine and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland discussed in detail further cooperation in the defense sector and the key needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Radosław Sikorski specifically addressed the establishment of joint production facilities and explored the possibility of procuring Polish weaponry, which has demonstrated its effectiveness on the battlefield.
Issues related to the preparation for the next meeting at the level of leaders’ advisors on the implementation of the Peace Formula and the organization of the Global Peace Summit were also discussed.
