FROM NEW-ORLEANS: A Piracy in the Gulf of Mexico; A Schooner Captured by Piratical Passengers (12/21/1863)

The steamship Morning Star, from New-Orleans Dec. 13 and Havana 16th, arrived at this port yesterday. She brings $100,000 in specie and 1,100 bales of cotton.

We are again indebted to Purser FULLER of the Morning Star, also the Purser of the steamship Merrimac, for favors.

The Morning Star left New Orleans Sunday, Dec. 13, arrived at Havana the 15th, and sailed next day. Has experienced heavy weather on the passage. Passed in the river, bound up, steamships George Washington, Karnak and McClellan; ships Skopie, Old Dominion, John and Albert, and French ship Annetta; barks Mustang, Tempest and Sachem; brigs Ida M. Conroy and Rival; schooner Robert Cauldwell, and several vessels under sail.

Off Mariel, passed a small schooner loaded with cotton (blockade runner) steering south.

Left at Havana steamship Corsica for New York, on the 19th. The French transport Allier arrived at Havana, on the 15th, with 1,200 troops for Mexico; was to sail the next day.

The British brig Mary bound from St John, N.B., for Havre, with a cargo of lumber, struck on the reefs at the entrance of the harbor, on the 9th instant. Crew saved. Vessel will be a total loss, but part of the cargo is expected to be saved. On the 12th the vessel and cargo sold for $2,500.

The Morning Star brings as passengers Capt. JAMES NICHOLS and WALTER GRENOUGH, supercargo of the schooner Joseph L. Geretz, which was captured by the pirates second day out from Matamoras.

Capt. NICHOLS reports that he left Matamoras Nov. 16, bound for New-York, with a cargo of cotton and six passengers on the night of the 17th. About 12 o'clock the captain and two men on deck, one at the wheel and the other aloft,
