The NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals plan on moving to a proposed new arena in suburban Virginia in 2028, ownership group chairman Ted Leonsis announced on Wednesday.
The $2 billion deal would see an entertainment district constructed at Potomac Yard in Alexandria, about four miles south of the current home arena for the clubs, Capital One Arena in the heart of the nation’s capital.

How much are the taxpayers going to have to cough up for this one?
“Keep voting rat DC....”
They will.
Pro players are about the only private sector employees in DC
its muzzue and indian in N VA now .
whitey being pushed out .
H1 Visas land for all the belt way bandits .
Potomac Yards, along the river, near the Alexandria-Arlington line. The Redskins tried to move there years ago before building FedEx Field, and when Washington was trying to get baseball back, one of the potential ownership groups wanted to build a ballpark there.
This is not a done deal. I suspect that the libs in Northern Virginia will strongly oppose this, as will most of the few conservatives here, although for much different reasons. The Dims are NIMBYs, and the rest of us don’t want to spend the money to subsidize these club owners.
I thought the caps played in Landover, MD
Somebody needs to tell the NBA that white flight is racist.
Capital One Arena was in a better location too. More lines running through the Metro station. Now it will be located in Northern Virginia so it will be harder for fans from Maryland to attend the games.
The only bad thing about Capitol One Arena is that crime is high again. The past 20 years, they were able to gentrify the area. But now all of it has gone to $#it.
There may be a lot of opposition but the politicians are not going to care. They see this as a win for Virginia
The Washington Football Team has long since left the District and DC Stadium, its longtime home, is about to be razed, if that hasn’t happened already. I believe the Washington Nationals are still playing in DC.
No "gentrified" area that gets "de-gentrified" has ever been "re-gentrified"...
Particularly when that gentrified area lies in the middle of vile crime areas of corruption organized & controlled by a crime family comprised of both DC and the federal government...
Covid broke D.C. Federal workers haven’t returned to D.C. If Biden wins again in 2024, that’ll destroy D.C.
It seems that there are a number of arenas and stadiums that have short lives nowadays.
In the case of Washington basketball and hockey teams, at first they played at the Capital Center, in Landover, Maryland which opened in late 1973.
Then in late 1997 they moved to this current arena, which had some different corporate names, in downtown Washington.
The Capital Center was okay for about 20 years before it was decided that a new Arena was needed.
Now about 26 years after the Downtown Arena opened , it is now deemed inadequate and a new arena is planned.
As I recall they were similar timelines in Georgia where both the Braves and Falcons had new stadiums built in the mid-1990s, but then they were deemed inadequate , and each team now has a new Stadium built in recent years.
If I recall correctly the Texas Rangers had a new Stadium built in the mid-1990s but then built a brand new stadium that opened in 2019 or 2020.
It seems that anyone planning a new sports facility, should keep in mind, that it may be deemed obsolete in about 20 years the way things are going.
You have all of that spot on. That downtown arena was great when DC cleaned the area up (like 15 years ago), but democraps have let criminals run the streets again. Traffic is going a problem in that area.
Better mayors back then. They were competent. Now Muriel Bowser is a joke. She's no better than Marion Barry, really.
Congress should control D.C.
It's in good shape. Minor renovations are fine. However, crime is an issue now.
The Whites are the minority now in the inner suburbs of D.C.
