Please tell me your definition of the later golden age of baseball.

Before the expansion from 16 teams (1961), before divisions and playoffs (1969), before the DH (1973), before the Curt Flood Case (filed 1970) and after the end of the dead ball era (1921).

“It’s a straight ten-year deal. No buyouts, no opt outs.”

The exact terms of the deferrals are unknown at this time. Needless to say, Ohtani’s record-setting contract is very complicated — he will not be paid a straight $70 million per year for 10 years — and the full details have not yet been reported.

We do know that he is interested in playing on a winner so he and the Dodgers have structure his contract through deferrals to lower the team’s cap and make room for some better free agents using Ohtani’s idea to lower his competitive balance tax number and give the Dodgers more freedom to spend on the team around him. The majority of Ohtani’s salary is deferred. The exact terms of the deferrals are unknown at this time.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/shohei-ohtani-contract-deferrals-opt-outs-everything-to-know-about-the-record-700-million-dodgers-deal/

But never say never as the elbow surgeries are in question for 2025 and if he wishes for options or down the road from now a buyout, that could still be on the table. Restructuring contracts is not unusual in MLB and if he feels he is not competitive, then the club or he could buyout. He still gets the cash, but it opens up his slot for another player. It also opens up another team to him even possibly a non playing position.

According to Ken Rosenthal, $30-40 million is deferred.

The added dimension here is that the Japanese TV networks pay a boatload in licensing fees to show Otani action clips here in Japan. So the Dodgers aren’t just paying for Otani’s ability to win games for them. They are also counting on the income Otani creates in television replay rights.

The nickname for Shohei Otani here is “Showtime” and the morning news/variety shows in Japan are constantly showing the clips of yesterday’s rocket shots into the bleachers.

“Most of these big money guys never have a great year after they sign and definitely flame out in 3-5 years. Then your stuck with them, like the Yankees with .195 hitting Stanton.”

Stanton not a free agent signing. The Yankees traded for him. Gave up decent 2nd baseman Starlin Castro and took on that godawful contract. The Yankees were badly burned.

You smell like a dudger. Like fear and choking and weakness under pressure. Over and over and over again.

Otani will spend 2024 rehabbing his Tommy John arm.

you nailed it. Here it is from the official major league baseball site

Total Bases (TB)
Definition

Total bases refer to the number of bases gained by a batter through his hits. A batter records one total base for a single, two total bases for a double, three total bases for a triple and four total bases for a home run.

Total bases are used to determine a player’s slugging percentage — which is total bases divided by at-bats. A player can only add to his total-bases tally through a hit.

Advancing on the basepaths — even via a steal — has no impact on a player’s total bases.

“According to Ken Rosenthal, $30-40 million is deferred.”

They’re all guessing. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, most of the $700 million in Ohtani’s deal is deferred and will be paid out after Ohtani’s 10-year tenure, Bobby Bonilla–style.

https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2023/12/10/23995331/shohei-ohtani-signs-los-angeles-dodgers-700-million-dollar-contract

The only consistent part is that pieces of the contract, or all of it, is being deferred to help out the Dodgers and will be paid down the road. Interesting that inflation takes a roll on the money so the depreciation of the $700M will make it less on the payoff. But that can be offset with loans and stock for instance. MLB, or most sports now, has been playing the game, (money), for a long time and has some good accountants to figure out loops.

The Angels should have trade Ohtani in the fall of 2022. They wouldn’t have been able to trade Ohtani in the summer of 2023 because a trade would have required a physical which would have exposed the injury that forces Ohtani to have Tommy John surgery, his trade value would have plummeted and the Angels would have been left with sorry prospects that may or may not have amounted to anything.

When Ohtani’s agent wouldn’t allow for an MRI this past July, I knew Ohtani and his agent were not dealing in good faith. Bye Felicia!

Stanton has been a stunning disappointment—his raw talent was off the charts...and then...nothing.

Pretty expensive Designated Hitter, if he’s not going to be pitching next season.
