New Yorkers spend at least 236 HOURS in traffic each year as the top 10 worst cities for congestion are revealed - with one surprising entry (Honolulu)

New Yorkers can only dream about the thrill of the open road as a new survey reveals they spend more of their lives stuck in traffic than drivers anywhere in the US.

**SNIP**

New York has increased its unwanted lead since last year and the findings were released just hours after New York's Traffic Mobility Review Board released its congestion pricing plan that could see drivers slapped with extra fees of up to $36.

Drivers of cars, SUVs and pickup trucks would be charged $15 a day to enter Manhattan below 60th Street.

Small trucks would be charged $24, commercial trucks $36, and motorcycles $7.50.

Taxi drivers, who largely opposed congestion pricing, will add $1.25 to their fares and ride share app drivers, like Uber and Lyft, $2.50 per ride.

'Ultimately, it is passengers – not drivers – who make the choice to add to vehicle congestion despite readily accessible public transportation to and within the Central Business District,' the Board said in their proposal.

'For these reasons, the congestion toll should be passed onto the customer, as part of the passenger fare.'

The scheme, first proposed in 2007, is due to begin in the spring of next year and is predicted to generate $1 billion for the MTA to spend on public transport.

And a study released last year projected the fee would reduce the number of cars entering Manhattan by 15 to 20 percent.

'Congestion pricing will reduce traffic in our crowded downtown, improve air quality and provide critical resources to the MTA,' said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

But it has attracted furious opposition from taxi drivers who protested outside her office last month demanding to be exempted from the charges.

'The MTA is going to collapse the yellow cab sector unless the governor intervenes immediately,'...

Run out of EV juice while stuck in traffic? Could always carry a spare container.

I have to drive through New York City several times a year for my job. I normally bypass completely by going to Scranton, PA then across to Connecticut.

I’ll be doing it again on Monday.

I’ve driven through NYC rush hour traffic a number of times...LA rush hour traffic once. LA was at least as bad...and maybe a bit worse.

Drivers of cars, SUVs and pickup trucks would be charged $15 a day to enter Manhattan below 60th Street.

so say I worked at 59th street and wanted to save the $15 each work day, is there enough parking for myself and my coworkers? What is the cost? Will my employer pay the $15 per day?

so now I work at 25th Street, is there enough parking for myself and coworkers plus enough public transportation for the 35 blocks I need to travel? O’ again employer pay $15 per day?

Of course I know the answer, so I choose to work from home, so no parking revenue for the garages in the area, no lunches purchased in the area, no coffee from StarBucks……. How long do small businesses survive?

Idling doesn’t consume energy in an electric vehicle. Not a bit. If you didn’t need lights, AC or a radio, you could idle for literally years in an electric car.

You can spend hours going a few blocks on a bad day in Manhattan.

I moved off Long Island in 1998....for my last job down there it routinely took 40-minutes to go 9 miles to work.

Idling in a driveway is one thing. Bumper to bumper traffic is another.

The brake lights alone are a constant drain in bumper to bumper traffic, along with the wipers and defroster on many days.

...and how many days a year in New York City would you not need air conditioning or the heater?

In my college years decades ago I found I could walk the distance between Penn Station and Grand Central in about the same time as it took a taxi to drive the distance.

I think the cost to transit a tunnel into NYC is similar ($13?).

I’m retired now. But during my career my primary concern was how long and arduous the commute to work was. I probably could have greatly increased my pay and improved my career path by moving to some dystopian industrial area with homeless standing in front of burning garbage cans for warmth. But you have to ask what you want from life and how you want to live it. Nobody on their death bed laments the fact they didn’t spend enough time commuting.

Land near Cross Bronx Expressway exits may become more expensive.

Have they fixed the roadway yet? I remember it as being a rough ride.

Blue states are going down ‘rat holes so fast that it may be a better choice for renters to simply rent for as long as their jobs remain in a Blue state.

Washington, DC is #5. Not sure what the appeal of that metro area is, other than Federal jobs.

Considering the cluster that Atlanta is, it doesn’t seem to make the top 10. I HATE driving through Atlanta.

Every major city needs a true bypass where NO local traffic can pass. Better yet, quit importing people into these cities. Population density is way too high there anyway.

Crossing the Hudson at the Governor Cuomo bridge (where the Tappan Zee was) is my usual solution.

No, it won't you liar.

It's simply going to line the pockets of greedy, corrupt politicians.

Do the math. Anyone with a 30 minute commute is going to come close to this regardless of traffic.
