Frances Sternhagen, the Tony-winning Broadway actress who also charmed TV audiences as Cliff Clavin’s mom, Esther, on “Cheers” has died. She was 93.

Sternhagen’s son, actor John Carlin, announced Wednesday on Instagram that his mother died peacefully of natural causes on Monday night.

“Frannie. Mom. Frances Sternhagen. On Monday night, Nov 27, she died peacefully at her home, a month and a half shy of her 94th birthday,” Carlin wrote. Fly on, Frannie,” he added. The curtain goes down on a life so richly, passionately, humbly and generously lived.”

‘Cheers’ Star Frances Sternhagen Dead: Tony-Winning Broadway Actress Was 93...

Frances Sernhagen had a very long and distinguished career. Odd that a small role on CHEERS is highlighted. I wasn't even aware she did that. I particularly like an old LAW&ORDER where she was trying to get revenge on her son's murderer. RIP.

Frances had one of those very distinctive voices. As soon as she starts talking, you do not have to be looking at the screen, you know who it is.

She was the wife in the Stephen King Golden Years TV show. She was always a class act. Whether in a minor or major role, she always added her innate, classic, cultured style.

She was perfect as Doctor John Carter’s Grandmother in the TV series ER. ‘Gamma’ was one of the best characters on ER. Probably in a nod to her classiness, ER let Gamma pass away quietly, in her sleep, during an afternoon nap.

That brought to mind that she had a small part in The Hospital back in 1974 or so. That distinctive voice.

She was Dr. Lazarus in Outland, with Sean Connery.

They had very good chemistry in that movie and I really liked how she portrayed the doctor.
