Even nowadays people from the DOD who are afraid to speak on the record say regarding UFOs, "We don't know what we are dealing with."
This is from Chris Mellon, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence in the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations.
The above statement might not mean that no one "knows what we are dealing with." Some may know more than others...a lot more.
