The mother of a young football fan who wore a headdress and painted his face red and black to a Kansas City Chiefs game has blasted Deadspin for accusing him of “doubling up” on racism against black and Native communities — noting that her son is himself Native American.
Holden Armenta became an unexpected focus of an article by senior writer Carron Phillips that focused on a photo of the boy standing sideways, suggesting he was wearing blackface with no mention of the red side.
“The NFL needs to speak out against the Kansas City Chiefs fan in Black face, Native headdress,” read the headline, which accused the boy of “doubling up on the racism.”
Phillips, a former New York Daily News reporter, also slammed Holden’s Native American headdress and his “Tomahawk Chop” gesture, claiming the boy “found a way to hate Black people and Native Americans at the same time.”
“It takes a lot to disrespect two groups of people at once,” Phillips wrote in the article, which has since been tagged with a community note on X branding it “purposely deceiving.”
“This is what happens when you ban books, stand against Critical Race Theory, and try to erase centuries of hate,” he wrote. “You give future generations the ammunition they need to evolve and recreate racism better than before.”

Great headdress.
It’s a dangerous reflex when one sees something festive and their immediate compulsion is to find or invent something to be ‘outraged’ about.
They become driven to ‘pop every colorful balloon of joy and fun’ within their sights, like a child invading a picnic with his BB Gun.
That becomes their raison d’etre. The payoff is when they think everyone else’s life has become as flat, grey, predictable and lacking in flavor as their own life.
Time for a massive lawsuit to put these thugs out of business.
When I saw the boy’s headdress, I immediately thought he might be Native American or to have obtained the headdress from someone who is Native American. I don’t think you can buy anything that well done from a non-native source.

The headdresses in the marching band photos kind of illustrate my point. They are clearly of lesser quality than the one the boy was wearing at the Chiefs game. They don’t look traditional at all, but more like something that would be part of a Halloween costume.
Like I said, they are made by each student (mom usually 😉) from a kit that is pretty expensive and very time consuming. Typical age of the ‘maker’ is 15. The headbands are each students only leeway and can be decorated with just about anything. The feathers are the school colors.
The band has performed in Dallas Cowboys old stadium at a halftime show, the Rose Parade and the Macy’s Parades over the years.
It is not offensive to a normal person. But these folks seem to think offense is an endangered species and must be preserved at all costs!
Actually that kid was honoring that other halfrican Obama
I dont disagree. Woke fools like the author who attacked this enthusiastic kid need recognized. But sometimes I feel that giving these people recognition only gives them power. Thanks for reply
