An AI has written and animated a song and it's terrible

Since the advent of modern scientific theory people who worry about such things have spent much time worrying about the creations of man supplanting humanity, developing a life of their own and the ability to out-compete their creators in all areas of life. From Shelley's Frankenstein to Cameron's Terminator fear of humans sowing the seeds of their own destruction run deep in the modern psyche, and with the advent of artificial intelligence engines such as ChatGPT this concern has only intensified for many.

Well, we're here to tell you that if 'Anna Indiana' is anything to go by the reign of mankind looks to be continuing for a good long time, because if computer's doing something creative better than a human is possible... this ain't it.

Hello world! I’m Anna Indiana and I’m an AI singer-songwriter. Here’s my first song, Betrayed by this Town. Everything from the key, tempo, chord progression, melody notes, rhythm, lyrics, and my image and singing, is auto-generated using AI. I hope you like it 💕 pic.twitter.com/0Cf42iyxHI

— Anna Indiana (@AnnaIndianaAI) November 24, 2023

We're not music critics but the song is terrible. Vaguely catchy? Sort of, but not in a good way. The animation is strangely unsettling, with a head that seems to bob and move in an unnatural style completely divorced from the body which remains unnervingly motionless. It's the Uncanny Valley distilled to its essence.

This is trash

— Bonchie (@bonchieredstate) November 24, 2023

Ope, as the Governor of Indiana, I'm afraid we're revoking your last name.

— Tony Kinnett (@TheTonus) November 24, 2023

Why is your AI threatening to burn down towns.

— Disparu (@disparutoo) November 24, 2023

Concerning certainly, but if this AI goes about tearing down towns as well as it writes songs and animates singers the town is going to be just fine.

Holy uncanny valley hell! lmfao

— Robert K Craig (@N7Verner) November 24, 2023

I really liked how they allowed you to read the code along with the lyrics.

Ok, I really didn't. Personally, the song sucked and the voice is annoying. Not to mention the freakish, out of proportion facial structure.

— Robert (@tally_dad) November 24, 2023

Yet another I - V - vi - IV chord progression that's used in every other pop song from 1996 to today. They needed advanced computers to come up with this dreck?🤡

— Ken Pomarco (@KenPomarco) November 24, 2023

Perhaps asking computers to be imaginative is asking too much.

This is an abomination https://t.co/w3HNrmxUjh

— Matt Walsh (@MattWalshBlog) November 24, 2023

Literally nobody asked for this. Nobody wants this. Also the lyrics suck and I actually found her voice to be slightly off and not enjoyable to listen to https://t.co/vwsPaTrXDJ

— Chaya Raichik (@ChayaRaichik10) November 24, 2023

There you have it, singers and songwriters.

Your careers are safe for a while yet.

AI programmers not so much. https://t.co/3yXjrDS3lP

— Mixy Pisa (@MixyPisa) November 24, 2023

We can hear the sigh of relief being breathed in Nashville and LA from here.

Seriously, this is terrible. If the Robocalypse is coming it isn't coming anytime soon, if this thing is anything to go by. So rest easy... but maybe not too easy.

Vernon Reid, lead guitar player and primary song writer for Living Colour and other stuff, has spent a lot of time messing with and talking about AI. His take on this kind of stuff is that of course that first attempt is awful, everybody’s first attempt is awful. But the one thing AI does better than humans is take criticism. If somebody writes a song and people accurately tell them it sucks that person will get discouraged, maybe quit all together. But an AI will (assuming you push the button) try again, and each time you reject its work it learns and gets better. Like a person, only without the emotional baggage, without the threat of quitting, or storming out of the studio.

It’s not good. Sounds like the AI is just aping pop singers and songwriters, which will only result in a bland and generic song.

“It’s not perfect, but within the next 10 years, it will be.”

Doubtful. AI doesn’t have an “ear”. It can’t hear its own work and actually know if it is good or not. It’s always going to have that handicap, which even the worst human songwriter can overcome.

Well, say you tell an AI to mimic the Beatles... you’re not going to get something that sounds like a new Beatles song. You’re going to get something that sounds like someone mimicking the Beatles, and we already have 1000 mediocre songs like that written by humans.

What made the Beatles the Beatles was being able to create a new Beatles song, that didn’t sound quite like any other Beatles song, and to create it “out of thin air”. But an AI can’t make anything out of thin air. It can only recapitulate, and if you are telling it to mimic a style, it will only recapitulate in predictable ways, which is even less creative.

Pachelbel already worked that chord progression to death.

Holy fer holy, did they intend it to be that bad? If not, why would you not have buried that?

But rhyming words, or not, and having them say something original is not within the AI capacity on purpose. It is a machine. A machine is programed by a human. So a machine cannot independently create thought, only copy facts provided by humans. So is it original or memorex?

“Maybe it’s different with music though”

Music is an entity in itself. Music was being written before they knew what they were doing. Rameau, a frenchman, and Froburger, a german, started to develope music theory in the mid 1720’s. But before anything was defined, JS Bach died in 1750 so he never had much of a chance to study the theory of music. So if something isn’t defined, AI can’t use it properly at least.

And when you consider the first known composers of classical music were Hermannus Contractus and Hildegard Von Bingen, they were on their own. Contractus was an 11th century monk who composed hymns and chants that are believed to be some of the earliest classical music. And they were working with voice only as only sticks and hands were the music instruments of the time and had no melody, just percussion. AI would go blank.

Precisely my point, a poetic phrase can change hearts, minds and history.

“Precisely my point, a poetic phrase can change hearts, minds and history.”

But AI is not capable of a poetic phrase without using someone else’s knowledge. It s incabable of original thought. It works with facts that exist. Not those that are still to found. Fact is fantasy that hasn’t happened yet. AI programming cannot contain that fantasy on its own because it hasn’t figured out how to program itself. Only repair. When it does, man is in big trouble because it will take it upon itself to think for us using pure logic without individualism. And it will only be able to use what it has and not what we can provide for it. Updates.

Why learn to code, when there’s an algorithm that will do what you want?

“Please explain.”

Existence is the fact or state of living or having objective reality. And over the years since we crawled out of the ocean, we have grown to accept God given laws. There is gravity, warmth, light, smell, and sound as a few.

But there are a few that a computer can’t accept. Faith is a big one. Only man has faith and it is a reality only within the ID side of the brain because faith can’t be proven, only defined.

There are many theories man accepts today that are nothing but faith. E=MC2 is one. No one has been able to go the speed of light squared yet so it is still a theory and not a reality. So it exists as a theory for man but can’t be defined for a computer.

Music is not a defined thing. In the early years, it was performed to accomplish a goal and didn’t become an entertainment because there was no public opera house until 1637 when the first one opened in Venice. The first public concerts for which admission was charged appeared in London in 1672.

But that is a flexability that is still to be written and it will be based on undefined platforms. Look in the last 50 years with techmo and jazz ensembles. Two different directions of the same product. And the more we change using the same techniques, the less we create. We stagnate.

I think this is the one here

https://sassbook.com/ai-story-writer.

The name looks familiar. I tried a number of different ones out, but I think this was the one I settled on as it allowed a certain amount of words per day or week or something. And would renew the next week - I wanted to try t9 see how good or bad it would be at creat8ng stories
