Regardless of your faith and beliefs, everyone loves a light show, especially at Christmas. Not so long ago, it was considered acceptable to hang a single strand of lights on your rooftop. Now, families and even entire neighborhoods compete against one another with the choreographed chaos of hundreds of thousands of twinkling LED lights, animatronic lawn ornaments, and the oft-underappreciated inflatable Santas, snowmen and reindeer.

ABC is being hypocritical, promoting excess electrical use, they should be canceled by the left.
Shove it back in their face.
I don’t hang lights for Christmas, but then I’m cheap and don’t want to pay an outrageous electric bill.
Give me a few strings of incandescent C9 bulbs and I'm happy as a clam.
A few old-fashioned static painted plywood reindeer, Santa and a sleigh are nice, too.
I hated the Friday after Thanksgiving, it meant untangling Christmas lights and finding out which plug went where,
Her proudest achievement was when the local paper made our house the best decorated for Christmas, my dad scowled at the electric bill.
Tiny small town of Dakota City, Iowa, has a family with an unbelievable tradition of Christmas lighting. Cost of electricity was over a thousand dollars a month years ago.

When I was a youngster, the whole family would get into the ‘68 Dart (7 total) and drive out across the town at night to see one large but tasteful Nativity Scene. It was something we thought of as special, even though my siblings and I weren’t especially devout at the time, my parents set a good example of what was important. (And yes I liked the downtown displays of candy canes and Santa Clauses and Christmas Trees on the street lamps. No more.)
I’m waiting for the satanists to go high tech.
Some high school kids stole the baby Jesus, and he put up a sign "Whoever stole the baby Jesus, you are going to hell".
The Catholic Tradition is to not place the Baby Jesus in the manger until Christmas, as he hadn’t arrived yet. The Wise Men only get placed at Epiphany. (Depending on your setup, you can have them in the distance)
yup, Larson is in my morning cartoon feed... 8^)
Let’s not give them any ideas now!
Thanks. I will make a visit there.
What else is entertainment in rural Iowa in winter?
Actually, a lot of folks head south to Arizona, Texas, or Florida for the winter (!). Outdoor types enjoy hunting and ice fishing. This January there will be the caucuses. Most people, when not shoveling snow (and if they are of working age), spend winter indoors stuffing their faces while watching TV or surfing the web.
January and early Febuary are usually the worst time for temperature and weather (occasional -35F temps, snow, etc).

I identify with your Dad.
My Christmas lights are an infrared filler for the IR detector on my house mounted cameras that turn on the outdoor spots when it ‘human detects.’ Also have a high lumen spot on my shotgun for mobility.
