Most students in the Cal State Chico library were silently poring over books or computers one recent afternoon. But one group was tucked into a corner peppering the university’s president, Stephen Perez, with questions.
What’s the world’s smallest mountain range? The Sutter Buttes, about an hour south of Chico. The only incorporated city in Modoc County? Alturas. The biggest lake in Plumas County? Lake Almanor.
The students were testing Perez’s knowledge of the largely rural swath of the state served by his campus. Because that’s where all of them are from, towns such as Williams, MacArthur and Graeagle.
This mostly lighthearted mixer had a serious purpose: getting university leaders to see and support rural students. It’s part of a small but growing effort on some campuses to create a stronger sense of belonging for rural students, who drop out of college at higher rates than their suburban counterparts.
The university is trying to “change the narrative,” Perez told the 15 or so students in the library, where a small space has been set aside for a permanent rural student resource center. “I’d love to talk to you more about what we can do,” he said.

Is everyone a snowflake these days, I grew up in a small rural agricultural town, my high school graduation class was less than 100 people, the next fall I was a freshman at University of Florida with a student body of over 40,000 students my first class at UF was a freshman humanities class of nearly 1000 people of the 40,000 students I knew no one
Start a club for mutual support.
How hard is that?
> The only incorporated city in Modoc County? <
If I were a rural student there, I could think of 100 questions to ask the university president more important than that one.
First on the list: Do you believe in Critical Race Theory?
Exactly. I imagine a lot of rural folks drop out because they are unwilling to put up with the insane behavior and beliefs of the faculty, administration and more urban counterparts.
We are approaching peak victimhood.
Soon there will not be enough victimhood to go around.
Well life on the farm is kinda laid back
Ain’t much an old country boy like me can’t hack
It’s early to rise, early in the sack
I thank God I’m a country boy
Well a simple kinda life never did me no harm
A raisin’ me a family and workin’ on the farm
My days are all filled with an easy country charm
Thank God I’m a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol’ fiddle
When the sun’s comin’ up I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain’t nothin’ but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I’m a country boy
When the work’s all done and the sun’s settlin’ low
I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow
The kids are asleep so I keep it kinda low
Thank God I’m a country boy
I’d play Sally Goodin all day if I could
But the Lord and my wife wouldn’t take it very good
So I fiddle when I can and I work when I should
Thank God I’m a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol’ fiddle
When the sun’s comin’ up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain’t nothin’ but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I’m a country boy, woo
Well I wouldn’t trade my life for diamonds or jewels
I never was one of them money hungry fools
I’d rather have my fiddle and my farmin’ tools
Thank God I’m a country boy
Yeah, city folk drivin’ in a black limousine
A lotta sad people thinkin’ that’s a mighty keen
Well, son, let me tell ya now exactly what I mean
I thank God I’m a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol’ fiddle
When the sun’s comin’ up I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain’t nothin’ but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I’m a country boy
Well, my fiddle was my daddy’s ‘til the day he died
And he took me by the hand, held me close to his side
Said, “live a good life, play my fiddle with pride
And thank God you’re a country boy”
Well, my daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle
Taught me how to work to play a tune on the fiddle
He taught me how to love and how to give just a little
And thank God I’m a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol’ fiddle
When the sun’s comin’ up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain’t nothin’ but a funny funny riddle
Woo, thank God I’m a country boy, yes
The whole thing will crash? (By 2030?)
Just a b.s. narrative to get more students to go to cal state schools. The staff at the univ. are gonna be cut when enrollment is down, and they are nervous. People are leaving ca. And college enrollments are down cause many of the schools offer majors in subjects that will not get a student a job...and Calif. is dying... chico state IS a rural college....all those questions asked could be answered on the internet. Don’t need no administrator to field questions like that.
