An exploding population of hard-to-eradicate “super pigs” in Canada is threatening to spill south of the border, and northern states like Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana are taking steps to stop the invasion.
In Canada, the wild pigs roaming Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba pose a new threat. They are often crossbreeds that combine the survival skills of wild Eurasian boar with the size and high fertility of domestic swine to create a “super pig” that's spreading out of control.
Ryan Brook, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and one of Canada's leading authorities on the problem, calls feral swine, “the most invasive animal on the planet" and “an ecological train wreck.”
Pigs are not native to North America. While they've roamed parts of the continent for centuries, Canada's problem dates back only to the 1980s when it encouraged farmers to raise wild boar, Brook said. The market collapsed after peaking in 2001 and some frustrated farmers simply cut their fences, setting the animals free.

I have shot dozens.
I like them under 150 pounds to eat.
I find them to be very tasty.
When they grunt they say; “Oink, eh?”ok
Good one and you made me laugh!
I am pretty close to the Canadian border and don’t look forward to a swine invasion even though hunting them looks like fun. I have had wild pig before and tasted much different than farm-raised pork but I bet the taste (much like wild turkey) depends on where you are at and what their diet is.
Anyone else have a mental picture of Chris Christie?
Everyone just needs to learn to really like pork taco’s
Problem solved.
Bacon!!! Open hunting?
I say we airlift a couple hundred into Iran.
The bug is the feature. Just eat them!!
That’s a whole lotta pork on the chopper!
Hmmm... has the AP or Yahoo ever been to the South?
Texas, perhaps Georgia? Alabama?
Cause those hawgs are already down here.
Read the article.
They blame hunting in part, because it is making the hogs nocturnal.
Here is a hint. Hogs are smart. Soon they will figure out that living in a blue city is even easier.
That picture reminds me of an old comic book character called “Wonder Warthog” I thought it was pretty good stuff back in the day.
Article needs more superlatives.
Maybe we should just let them breed out of control...in certain areas - like Dearborn Michigan :)
They are easily taken care of *if* you do not allow people to set up sanctuaries for them.
They can be hunted with dogs, they give off infrared signatures. Hunt them relentlessly and you can irradicate them.
But, you cannot use half measures, or it will not work.
You know Texas is not serious about getting rid of the problem, when they charge you to hunt the pigs.
New invasion?
Ted Nugent has been shooting these from helicopters for twenty years.
The deer have chronic wasting in my part of northern minn so if times got tough it would be nice to have a safer alternative meat source unless you’re a farmer I see little down side.
