Russia pivots to Chinese CPUs that aren't subject to US sanctions — Russia's homegrown Linux-based Alt OS now supports Chinese LoongArch chips

The Alt operating system developed by Moscow, Russia-based Basalt SPO has been recompiled to support Chinese Loongson processors based on the LoongArch architecture. Blacklisted Loongson has actively supported the porting process. The OS is available as a distro with a basic set of programs (Firefox, GIMP, LibreOffice) that can be installed on desktops, workstations, and servers.

Alt is now the first Russian operating system capable of running on Loongson's processors based on the 64-bit LoongArch architecture, such as LS5000 and LS6000 series, which some in Russia consider alternatives to x86 CPUs from AMD and Intel. Recently, China lifted the export ban on Loongson's latest CPUs to Russia, which opened doors to using these processors in desktops, laptops, servers, storage equipment, and other applications.

The Alt OS is only the first step towards broader support of LoongArch-based CPUs in Russia, but it is undoubtedly essential.

Russia's adaptation of the Linux-based Alt to support the LoongArch architecture from China's Loongson company is a crucial development. On the one hand, by mating the Alt OS with Loongarch64 processors, Russia is moving towards greater technological independence from Western technologies and diversifying its use of processor technology. On the other hand, it introduces a dependency on Chinese technology.

Remember all the fearful talk earlier this year about how Russia was working with China and some middle-east countries to come up with a reserve currency to replace the dollar?

Haven’t heard anything more about that one.

It's the same as with Chinese food. With Longson, you run the
program, and a half hour later you feel like running it again.

Again, I caution you guys to presume inferiority.

For 10 years Soyuz was the only way US astronauts could reach the ISS. They are far ahead in hypersonics. There is no reason to presume inferiority.

They have their own semiconductor foundries in Russia, and China as well, while we are largely dependent on what is made in Taiwan.

They have superior education. Check our plummeting ACT and SAT scores. And don’t stomp your feet and start talking Democrats and politics. It doesn’t matter why it plummets. It simply does, and that is why they lead in hypersonics and we had to beg for rides to the ISS . . . for 10 friggin years.

Every military disaster in history starts with overconfidence.

The USA has fallen behind, but there is still way too much BoomerCon bravado.

But our tech companies have greater strength through diversity.

Remember all the fearful talk earlier this year about how Russia was working with China and some middle-east countries to come up with a reserve currency to replace the dollar?

Haven't heard anything more about that one.

That is because you haven't been paying attention. The BRICS economic alliance is now likely to overtake G7 before the end of the decade. Look it up. Before the Ukrainian situation and the resulting sanctions no one cared about them. Now because of this falderal the almighty Dollar and Euro will soon be playing second fiddle to whatever monetary schemes BRICs countries come up with.

The economic repercussions will be massive to a country with $33 Trillion in official debt and over $100 Trillion in unfunded liabilities are incalculable. This comes to over $800,000 per household over half of which pay no taxes at all. How is it possible for the US to keep increasing debt that there is no way to actually pay back ever? The sham only works with the nearly the entire world using our currency for trade and legitimizing its value.

Things are far worse than anything that you “haven't heard” lately. We have spent our children's and grandchildren's and generations beyond futures into oblivion.

Russia and China churns out engineers and scientists.

America churns out 'studies' majors and DEI and BLM racists.

In a way you can't blame American students. Our overlords import
Chinamen and Hindu chimps to steal American tech jobs.

Do NOT sell the Russians short.

They are very smart. The political system stifles them but some get through.

You assume they are backwards and ignorant at your peril.

Longsoon is about three years maybe a little more behind Intel's top rung processors. But Linux takes far less processing power and overhead than Windows. In other words it does not matter. This is one more way that “sanctions”, “black listing” and other actions have caused the Russians, Chinese, and other BRICS countries to pursue more independence from the West.

How much of a hardship is it for them to use processors that are slightly behind the best available? Outside of gaming... probably none at all. It used to be that Russian diplomats stole pencils from Western diplomats because their pencils were inferior. But unless the Russian diplomats are into playing “The Assassin's Creed” or other processor intensive games who is actually going to care?

And disregard of national debt exacerbated from unnecessary foreign wars. All historical empires met their demise by overspending on foreign wars. It is called megalomania. Trump is the only one who clearly is against foreign unnecessary wars

Good news to hear that China and Russia are developing their own Operating Systems and Chips.

Now, we can hack into Chinese and Russian technology without compromising European and USA technology.

"Russia and China churns out engineers and scientists.

-----------

Russia actually produces an equal number of STEM grads with the USA.

Which is impressive since they have only half the population.

And their STEM graduates aren't poisoned and distracted with wokeness.

(Israel should be looking at the Iran numbers, and be worried. That's where those drones came from.)

Re: "They are far ahead in hypersonics."

As a naval weapon, hypersonics have a clear advantage.

Over land, a 500 mph, ground hugging, cruise missile is still almost invulnerable.

Also noteworthy, the USA has spent many billions of dollars for hypersonic R&D.

However, from general reading, I have never noticed a USA military consensus that we need to compete - step for step - against the Russians and Chinese for hypersonic technology.
