Rats can be bad for me with all the fruit trees. I can’t poison them. The water fowl and other birds will eat the carcasses. I just let them take a little bit of my fruit, just like the birds get a little bit. But the squirrels that dig up my seeds or a seedling pi$$es me off. Once, I miraculously got a Joshua Tree seed to germinate and those little bass turds dug it up. I was angry.
My chickens did similar to me once. I layed out the rows in my garden and was putting down seeds. I always covered the seeds with my feet as I went. Stupid chickens were walking behind me scratching them up and eating them. I love all animals but some can be a real pain.
#1; Squirrels and seedlings. Dollar store. $1.25. Get these and put them over your seedlings, but a rock on it. Protects until they get larger and established and squirrels leave them alone. You might be able to protect some fruits with organza bags. (Not completely. I have seen the bags on the ground torn and with smashed up fruit. It slows them down and makes them have to work for the "treat".)
Rats. Feed them chewing gum. They can't digest it. It will not kill predators like owls or hawks or snakes that can more easily catch them because they are moving slowly.
