Should a 71 year-old be doing that with just a dog? Just askin’.

What should he do? Not hike alone? If you fall a significant distance, a companion won’t help you. If you have a heart attack out on the trail, a companion won’t help you. One of the reasons people like to go out in the mountains and hike is for solitude. To get away from the constant jibber jabber, to have to make every decision jointly. Are you ready to sit down for a few minutes? Should we camp here or over there? Am I walking a little too fast, or a little too slow,? There’s nothing wrong with wanting to hike alone,

I knew a guy who had cardiac arrest in his recliner in front of the TV. When they found him Oprah was on. I’d say this guy had the better of it. Should have let someone know where he was going in a bit better detail though.

Should you be allowed to post on FR?
Just saying.

Good on this guy for enjoying life. Too bad it made his dog suffer for a time, but he came thru too.

Why not?
I think he’s old enough to make his own decisions.

I hiked Lone Peak in Utah when I lived there. An older couple, probably late 60s passed us hiking up. They had lunch at the peak and greeted us again on the way down. If that’s what you do, you get accustomed to it.

Should you drive your car to the store tomorrow? Things happen all the time you cannot control.

Im 70 and out on the place every day, over a mile radius from the house. Nobody knows where I go. 70 is old, experienced and not nearly decrepit. I can still work a lot of much younger men into the ground a day at a time. At a slower pace I don't stop much. Like I have said to so many, I'd like to be around to see them at my age with similar miles. My record for on the job with naps and sporadic sustained sleep is right at 60 days. A shower and shave work wonders. My record for no sleep is about three days. 24 to 48 hour days were common in the business for a lot of us.
At 70 my Dad was still topping trees with a chainsaw. Not often, but he did it. A lot depends on determination and blessings. My hero died feeding his cows, heart attack, sat down against the wheel of his truck with his dog for another sunset and that is where he was found. He was nearly 90. Good life. Blessed. 70 is Fall for a bit longer, not Winter.
