WASHINGTON (TND) — Now is a good time to check that $2 bill stuffed away in a drawer or old wallet.
The unique currency has been in circulation since the 1860s but some people are finding them to be upwards of $4,500, according to U.S. Currency Auctions.
Several editions of the bill have been in circulation with the most recent being designed in 1963, the U.S. Treasury Department notes. Some feature Thomas Jefferson's face, Alexander Hamilton or America's first secretary of the treasury.
A bill's worth depends on several factors including if it was in circulation.
Uncirculated bills with red or brown seals can be worth thousands, according to U.S. Currency Auctions. Serial numbers and the condition of the bill are also important to consider.
According to MarketWatch, if a serial number is printed on the left and ride sight side of the bill starts with the number one and was printed in 1976, the bill would be worth more than $20,000.
Collectors are also interested in serial numbers that are "solid," all of the same digits, or "ladder," digits in ascending order.
As of 2022, there were 108.3 million $2 notes in circulation, the U.S. Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing reported.
However, the notes are still being printed and circulated which means most $2 bills are worth exactly that.
Back in the 1950’s when I was a little boy growing up in Philly - people called them “she notes”. This was because they were like women - hard to get rid of.
Hey - just remembering how it was.
2013. All sequential numbers. Completely uncirculated.
> Most people think they’re fake. <
Yep. Here’s a story about an 8th grader who tried to buy lunch with a legit $2 bill her grandmother gave her. Mayhem ensued.
Sold! You have to pick them up in person.
Stores didn’t like them because there was no slot in the cash drawer for them...........
In Maryland?
I left there 40 years ago!..................
Thanks, but I don’t trust government inflation numbers.
It’s fairly accurate.
Just put in a value of something you know the cost of and a date and check its accuracy.
It works backwards as well.................
Somewhere around my house, I have a $2 bill signed by a race car driver who was popular years ago (maybe in the 70s). I can’t remember his name but he drove the #2 car. It was in the bag of old coins I inherited from my mother. Now, I need to remember where I put it. Sigh....
I have one...but it’s new,probably the newest.
I’ve got one or two of those laying around somewhere.
Got one real one I’ll have to check. I’m sure it’s only worth only $2.00, but I’ll have to check.
Lucky you.
We moved her when Jenny Granholm was a failure as Michigan Governess. I lost my job there and a Maryland based company liked my skill set and paid me to move here.
We are heavily involved in some ministry stuff that in ways are more important than the job, so that’s why we’re staying. Every year we say “next year we’re moving.”
We’d like to go back to Michigan but it’s a complete cesspool now too.
When was the last time you got a half dollar in your change.?
COME ON DOWN TO FLORIDA! YOU’LL NEVER REGRET IT!......................
1967.....................
Richard Petty! Now I remember. That’s the signature on the $2 bill.
He’s still alive!......................
