Crunches are pointless, expert says — how to lose weight the right way
New York Post ^ | Nov. 2, 2023 | Brooke Kato

Exercises that target certain groups of fat — whether it’s thunder thighs or love handles — might be useless, experts say.

In fact, it’s “simply not possible” to lose fat through area-specific workouts — fitness influencers be damned.

Dr. Nick Fuller, an author and obesity researcher at the University of Sydney, debunked the viral myth, claiming that science, genetics, gender and age determine how the body stores and burns fat. Writing for the Conversation, Fuller explained that when the body needs energy — think: during a workout — it pulls from the fat stores everywhere in our bodies, making it impossible to spot-reduce.

Make sure you are eating 1gm of protein for every pound of your target weight. Eat the same amount of calories in fat.

Cut back your carbs gradually, until you start losing 1-2lbs every two weeks, if you are a woman, or 2-4lbs every two weeks if you are a man.

Now, you will be losing weight.

As a long-time athlete, I will attest to the well-known fact that six-pack abs are created in the kitchen. The best way to get rid of the blubber is a low-carb diet.

As to fitness though, a good cardio routine and regular weight-lifting (even with moderately light weights) are required.

Almost.

Yes, you would consume 150gms of protein/day. This will take into account the protein that you will use up in your desire to lose weight because burning excess fat uses protein.

Each gram of protein has 4 calories, so 150gm of protein will have 600 calories.
You consume 600 calories in fat, not grams. Fat has 9 calories/gm.

That is set in stone. If you are eating that much protein and that much fat, there is no reason to reduce that. All the reduction comes from your carboydrates, especially the processed ones and the sugar drinks or juices that you might consume.

Your liquid, to quench your thirst, should either be water or lemon infused water if you need a taste. If you drink milk, that’s part of your calorie intake.

You don’t need to cut a lot. You just cut a little bit every two weeks until your scales change.

But it does.

You build muscle in that area and the fat goes away in that area.

Most people never exercise the area between their ears which is why they become fatheads.

150 grams is three times the normal daily requirement.

You need about 0.75gm for every pound. That’s the normal amount. However, in weight loss mode, you process protein when you process fat. A little bit of extra protein is needed to help insure that you don’t consume your muscle mass in your journey to lose weight. That’s where the extra 0.25gm/pound comes in.

Most Americans consume a lot more than this anyway, because that protein is about a 5oz steak, or 1/3lb. That’s the daily intake, spread across all your meals.

If you couple that with 600 calories of fat, it’s only 1200 calories. You’re not going to maintain 200lbs of weight on a 1200 calorie diet if you were to eliminate all carbs.

So, it’s quite safe to consume that much protein and fat and just enough carbohydrates that you feed your energy needs, while being calorie deficient enough to cause your body to consume your body fats.

7’s the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that’s the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin’ on a branch, eatin’ lots of sunflowers on my uncle’s ranch.

You know that old children’s tale from the sea. It’s like you’re dreamin’ about Gorgonzola cheese when it’s clearly Brie time, baby.

“ A 5 oz serving of steak provides 38 g of protein”

To get to 150 grams of protein, you’d need 20 oz of steak a day

Spot reduction is a myth, so sit-ups do nothing for belly fat.

“claiming that science, genetics, gender and age determine how the body stores and burns fat”

Let us not forget calorie intake and expenditure.

Ground beef has 17g protein/100g meat.
150gm of protein is about 900g of cooked meat, which is about 2lbs.

That’s if you only had the steak. There is protein in fruits and grains and many vegetables. So, you wouldn’t need that much meat, as long as you took the time to measure out in your diet how much protein is in each food you consume.

It’s also a 9oz cooked meat spread through your day. It’s breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, supper, snack.

It really isn’t that much, when you think about it.
