Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Firefighters and divers responded to a boat ramp in Florida where an SUV attempting to lower a boat into the water ended up submerged.

The Naples Fire-Rescue Department said in a Facebook post that firefighters and dive team members responded to a report of "a vehicle submerged in water at the boat ramp."

The department said all of the occupants of the vehicle were able to safely evacuate before it went underwater.

"The driver of the vehicle was putting their boat in the water when the vehicle slid down the ramp and into the water," the post said. "Rescue divers were deployed to recover the vehicle and the trailer, which was fully submerged."

The vehicle was recovered with assistance from a tow truck, the department said.

Tip to newbies: SUV does not stand for subversive underwater vehicle.

I worked one summer while in college as a Waterways Patrolman (think Highway Patrol in a boat). Happened several times. Best one was a guy bought a new ford truck. Then drove the truck to the boat dealership to pickup his new boat. Drove to the lake. Launched his boat, his trailer, and his new ford. Didn’t have 30 miles on the truck.

Another incident in Southern Tennessee at Lake Tim’s Ford. This is a deep lake with a step drop off. A guy launched his SUV. The water was deep enough to require a diver to retrieve the SUV. The diver asked the owner if he had insurance and if he wanted to total the SUV. He did and he wanted to total. The diver left the windows up so when the water drained, it would shatter all the glass.

There is a guy on youtube that does a boat launch video at the Black Point marina in Florida. He’s pretty interesting and captures the hassles, arguments, crashes and the occasional “bloop bloop” as he calls them. IIRC usually at low tide. Fancy trucks with rugged off-road tires are the worst.

2WD trucks are bad at low tide. Slick ramp, rear wheel drive and low ground pressure on the rear wheels.

I usually see where the truck can’t pull the boat out and a bunch of ppl are needed to stand on the bumper.

I have AWD/4WD and FWD to serve my watercraft.

Once at a boat ramp in Seattle and old Volkswagen van could not get the boat out of the water. The guy called a friend wh came with another Volkswagen van who hitched to the first one and they were both pulling to get the boat out. Funny as heck.
