Tomato pie (New Jersey-style) is a thin-crusted dish that inverts the typical pizza's "sauce on the bottom, cheese on top" formula, and it is basically pizza in reverse. Dating back to the 19th century, this dish is derived from Sicilian pizza and is typically found in Sicilian-American communities

Some of those concoctions looked vile, not proper pizza at all.

Thanks! That was the biggest laugh I have had in a long time, reviewing those pizza photos.

#3 on the list: “Deep-fried pizza is a Scottish concoction consisting of a pizza that is deep-fried in hot oil (without being dipped in batter) instead of being baked in an oven. It can be found in numerous chips shops throughout the country, where it is fried in the same oil where fish and chips are prepared. This extremely caloric and unhealthy meal is often served with salt, vinegar, or chips in order to improve its flavors.”

Great article for pizza ideas. I might be making some of these pizzas to see what they are like. I operate on the idea that people’s personal opinions, particularly about food, are personal. That doesn’t mean I’ll like something or not. I’ll try and eat about everything. Whether I eat it a second time is a different proposition.

There’s one that is deep-fried, and actually that can be quite good. There’s a lake resort slightly upstate from NYC where there’s a pizza stand that deep-fries the slices. I never came across another one.

I don’t know what that black stuff on it is, though. Could be black olives, I guess, which doesn’t sound bad. Nice relief from the crispiness of a fried slice.

Tomato pie sounds good and the Quad City-Style Pizza sounds interesting.

Don't think I would eat the others.

The strangest pizza I have ever enjoyed was a white sauce pizza with heart of palm and Golf Sauce.

Weird and tasty.

Be forewarned about Pizza Guys gluten free combo. I have celiac, and cannot get near wheat/gluten. My beautiful bride is gluten sensitive. The Pizza Guys gluten free combo is so good, my wife suspects there is crack cocaine, or something else, in the crust. They use a separate oven and separate utensils to make it. As with many things in our current world, they deliver. For our at-home movie nights, we pop our own popcorn, and every once in a while order the Combo. Waaaaay good.

While we’re on the subject of food, there are two things I wish people would make: baked pie crust without the pie filling, and jelly donuts without the jelly inside. I often wish the gooey insides of things were missing altogether.

You can buy pie crust. A good doughnut shop will have a confectionary sugar doughnut with a hole in the middle. If you don’t put jelly or creme in the middle the dough in the middle would be uncooked, which is why plain doughnuts have holea in the first place.

Deep-fried pizza is a Scottish concoction consisting of a pizza that is deep-fried in hot oil (without being dipped in batter) instead of being baked in an oven.

Deep fried dough is something that’s been around everywhere forever. Back east, we called it fried dough, and put and sauce or butter and confectionary sugar. In the mid-west the sweetened version is called Elephant Ears. Here in Arizona it is called Navajo Fry Bread (great back story for its origin) and can be topped with anything from sauce to Mexican taco/burrito fillings to hamburger (Navajo Burger).

Worst pizza I ever had was in Sevastopol, Crimea.

The sauce was ketchup. The cheese was some sort of orange processed American-style fake cheese. The sausage was hotdogs cut into little pieces.

Honorable mention goes to pizza I had in the port city Civitavecchia, Italy. The crust was about as thick as a saltine cracker. It came in two flavors: Tomato sauce and anchovies (nothing else) or tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. A restaraunt nearby sold Pizza Americano which was a little more familiar to my palate.

Worst pizza I had was Paesano’ in Rockford., IL. The dough was raw in the middle. Runner-up was some place on Route 66 east of Windham, CT. The crust was nore cardboardy than cardboard, and their attempts to compensate with too much cheese failed. Third place is one I used to have to prepare… Pizza hut’s “Thin and Crispy”, the original Pizza Hut pizza.,No sugar in the dough. The little yeasties are NOT happy and they protest by tasting bad.

They don’t have those around here (the pie crust places). I supposed you could go into a good bakery and have one specially made for you.

As for the donuts, the ones in the circle shape are not as good, generally. There is one bakery that puts a small amount of mild cream cheese in the middle of the donut instead of jelly. I buy those a lot.
