‘Wholly ineffective and pretty obviously racist’: Inside New Orleans’ struggle with facial-recognition policing

n the summer of 2022, with a spike in violent crime hitting New Orleans, the city council voted to allow police to use facial-recognition software to track down suspects — a technology that the mayor, police and businesses supported as an effective, fair tool for identifying criminals quickly.

A year after the system went online, data show that the results have been almost exactly the opposite. Records obtained and analyzed by POLITICO show that computer facial recognition in New Orleans has low effectiveness, is rarely associated with arrests and is disproportionately used on Black people.

The first facial recognition search under the new policy occurred on October 21, 2022, using surveillance footage to help identify a Black man suspected of a shooting by matching his picture with a database of mugshots. The results: “Unable to match, low quality photo.” Over the next year, the NOPD would see a string of largely similar results.

"Wholly ineffective..."

And then five paragraphs down...

"Although it has not led to any false arrests..."

Of course he was blind in one eye and had cataracts in the other.

He all ways thought I was my cousin... fun guy.

“Arrested offenders in New Orleans are almost exclusively black males from impoverished communities: in 2011, 97% were black and 95% were male; 91% of victims were black as well”

If AI is so effective that it can eliminate the human race then how come it’s so stupid it thinks all people of certain races look alike?

Can’t distinguish between Nicole Ari Parker who was on Chicago PD and Whoopi Goldberg? Not smart.

“...disproportionately used on Black people.....”

that may be true for facial ID, and it is also true about prison population. The statement is also true about those who commit crimes. The published FBI statistics clearly record most crime is committed by the black population.

So are they claiming that someone is choosing to intentionally use it more on blacks?

When I travel overseas I have locals tell me that as a good natured jab, I just laugh. Especially in Thailand because my host and friend said that but I retorted, “You all look the same to me too because I can only see the top of your heads.”

I am about a foot taller than the average Thai.

I love good natured ethnic humor and jabs. It makes us appreciate our differences and breaks the tension that comes with differences.
