Whiskey War has done it again.
Because being named the Best Blended Whiskey in the country three years in a row wasn’t enough, High Bank Distillery Co.’s lauded Whiskey War was recently named the Best Whiskey in America at the Spring 2023 John Barleycorn Awards, an international spirits competition created by industry writers.
The winners were recently announced, and Whiskey War Barrel Select Batch #11-Double Double Pinot Noir took home the coveted title of Best Whiskey in America.
The same Whiskey War variant took home the Best American Blended Whiskey award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition this year, with Whiskey War Barrel Proof winning the same category in 2021, and Whiskey War Barrel Select winning in 2022.
“Coming off of winning Best American Blended Whiskey at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, we were excited to see how our Whiskey War line competes at other prestigious spirit competitions,” High Banks’ co-founder Adam Hines said in a press release. “Winning Best American Whiskey, means that we beat out some of the largest names in the spirit industry in the U.S – including and excluding the ‘blended’ category. This win is huge for us.”
Whiskey Barrel Select Batch #11 – Double Double Pinot Noir was a limited release, and is currently sold out.
I’ll have to find this one. Likely won’t be cheap, but...
Speaking of whiskey . . . Has anyone tried Fireball cinnamon-flavored whiskey? My local market often has it on sale during their $5 Friday event. How does one drink it? Straight? With club soda?
Maybe an acquired taste from college days in Carolina, but I’m a Bourbon drinker. Jim Beam does it for me.
“Fireball cinnamon-flavored whiskey”
Tried it. Tastes very sweet at first, with some heat afterwards. A bit like drinking a cinnamon-flavored lollipop.
Haven’t heard of it drank with a mixer, always straight - usually as a shot.
A couple of sips straight.
OK, that’s enough. I’ve tried it.
Straight ..
The sell single shot bottles by the bucket. It has 21, or 33% ABV.
There was recently some small scandal about Fireball miniatures (aka nips, shooters, or singles) because they allegedly didn’t actually contain whiskey, but were just generic ethanol with cinnamon flavoring.
Batch #11 is the classic Whiskey War Double Oaked finished in anadditional Pinot Noir cask, for a total age statement of 6 years. Master Distiller Adam Hines speaks to why this might be his favorite release since Double Double Oaked Batch #1 was released.
Our Barrel Select program is one of our our distillery team’s creative outlets. We get to experiment with unique barrels, taste through the product at various stages of the aging process and release out one-of-a-kind products to our audience who love to try new things.
Our distiller Mike Smith’s favorite releases to date have been Barrel Select Batch #2 Pinot Noir and Batch #9 2nd-Fill Pinot Noir. This barrel still had so much flavor to give so we decided to fill it again, this time our Double Oaked product. This is the first time we have taken our award-winning Double Oaked product and finished it in a wine cask.
The flavor was shocking in the best way. It brings in the spice and oak from the Double Oaked and buttery, berry notes from the wine. It’s awesome to see our team effort come to fruition with such a unique result.

Ethanol?! Crikey. If it weren’t so dang expensive I could just drink gasoline.
Columbus?
Like in Ohio?
I do like whiskey, but have never been impressed by the Ohio varieties.
Now Kentucky whiskey gets my attention.
Tennessee whiskey? Oh yeah!
Out of a paper bag on a park bench. Fireball is the kind of stuff college students drink.

Nassif Family Reserve Whiskey from Cats Eye Distillery in Bettandorf IA. A blend of 14 year old American light whiskey with Bourbon and rye essence. One of the most complex whiskies I have ever tasted.
