25 Best Dystopian Movies
Cosmopolitan ^ | 11/1/23 | Courtney Young

1984

The film adaptation of George Orwell’s famed 1949 novel of the same name (and current favorite reading material of America’s right wing), 1984 follows a lowly citizen living under a totalitarian regime called Oceania. The novel was first adapted for the screen in 1956, but this version is the official 1984 version of 1984. This version is considered to be the best screen adaptation of the story, remaining pretty faithful to the source material. Stream it. Big Brother is watching.

Yeah another worthless list. Mad Max Fury Road over The Road Warrior? nuff said. I would rank Road Warrior and Terminator 2 as two of the greatest action movies ever and both were dystopian.

“Demolition Man”

Yeah, me too. I’m surprised “Brazil” didn’t make the list.

"Very strange I don’t see I Am Legend with Will Smith."

As much as I like Will Smith movies, I think this is one weak because lack of interactive dialog with other humans until toward ending. Plus, there are 4 adaptations from the book.
I Am Legend -1954
The Last Man On Earth - 1964
The Omega Man - 1971
I Am Legend - 2007

I am sick of vanpire, zombie, and ghoul movies, except for Zombieland that I thought was funny. C'mon, Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson, and even Jesse Eisenberg was funny at times with his Zombie rules. The sequel sucked. Interesting that even Brad Pitt couldn't make ZombieZ work.

My wife is a Zombie freak. She has watched the TV series True Blood, Twilight, and Walking Dead over and over. Probably because they both have a love interest between a vampire and human, except for Walking Dead. She also loves slasher movies, where I prefer suspense and mystery and not gore for gore sake. She goes to bed scared and wakes up and roles over and holds me. Women!

I also thought Interstellar was interesting, but a little too timeline brainy for my wittle non-physics mind. I''ll think of others being a sci-fi fan since childhood. Oh, the original Time Machine was good. The remake, not so much.

I would love to see someone make a series out of Matthew bracken’s “Enemies” books... That would be great, but NOT likely to happen... That would cut a little to close to the quick.. The DC lawyers wouldn’t like it one bit..!!

"because he had the bible memorized so it could be reprinted."

Right, but his deathbed scene was touching and showed that he may have had another or bigger mission. What I didn't care for is watching Roddy McDowell placing the newly printed Bible next to the Koran. However, the Torah was on the other side of the Bible. That's Hollywood.

Also, didn't care for the young girl heading back to corrupt town she came from. They could have faded to end with her placing flowers on his grave.

What drives me and the wife crazy is the obvious setup for a sequel in so many movies. We also get bored with all the martial arts and weaponry fights like in the John Wick sequels. Every few scenes there is a new fight and much of it is so over the top, no human could survive.

The Matrix is at the top of post-apocalyptic movies.

Another well done but depressing movie is The Road. Also, 28 Days Later.
I'm probably the only person here that likes The Postman. Water world not so much.

"I didn’t see “The Island” on there."

Probably because it wasn't post apocalyptic. Civilization still existed as you see when the 2 main characters escape. It was about people with real money being cloned for replacement of failing body parts. It was okay movie and concept. Biggest plus was seeing actress Scarlett the first time in a tight fitting outfit. Okay, I'm a dog.

Many SILENTS were extremely well done films!

Many of the pre-code early talkies have held up very well and are far better than the remakes and/or modern movies of today.

This is a review of the film comparing its tripe to the very conservative book

True but dystopian usually describes a society. The society in Interstellar is a lot like this one although imperiled.
