A fiend strangled a woman from behind – causing her to black out – in a heinous, apparently unprovoked attack in the East Village last week, cops said.
The 25-year-old woman was walking near Houston Street and Avenue D around 4:10 a.m. on Oct. 22 when an unidentified approached and strangled her from behind, police said.
The sudden attack caused the victim to fall to the ground and black out briefly, authorities said.
When the woman got back on her feet, her assailant ran off toward Avenue C, police said.

I’d have to say she was lucky that she survived. And when walking in NYC at 4 AM, be alert... and prepared to defend yourself.
This harkens back to the reporting I saw on the lynching of a local fiend (black, accused of raping a white woman), more than a hundred years ago.

In NYC, the bars close at 4:00 a.m., so at 4:10, chances are good that she was FAR from alert and prepared to defend herself...more likely inebriated.
Whatever happened to the guy who they want to prosecute for saving people on the NY subway?
But speaking of Houston and Elm...
About 40 years ago I was in that city (for the first time) for a convention and noticed on the map (paper in those days) that I could walk to the vicinity of Houston and Elm from my hotel. So, I took a detour from the convention and walked there. It was an interesting experience to visit something that you had seen a million times in hundreds of photographs, films and illustrations, for the prior two decades. It formed an impression of scale and distance in my mind that was contradicted by the first experience of being there and walking the site. Everything in reality was a much tighter scale and the distances were much closer than the impression I had from the frequently repeated images. I immediately thought, yeah, it could be done. It was not an impossible feat.
