Food delivery service DoorDash has warned its customers that not tipping their drivers may lead to delayed deliveries.
The largest food delivery company in the United States warned in a since-deleted post to X that because its drivers can see which orders carry tips, and are free to take the jobs they want to, they may not be incentivized to take lower-value gigs.
DoorDash, which currently holds 65% of the online meal delivery market in the US, said that it was testing out a new pop-up warning that encouraged its users to leave a tip.
The Verge reported that adding a $0 tip to an order results in a pop-up window that reads:
'Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered — are you sure you want to continue? Orders that take longer to be accepted by Dashers tend to result in slower delivery.'
The outlet reported that the new pop-up warning doesn't appear to have been pushed across the US.
One Verge reporter in New Jersey reportedly received the pop-up, while another in South Carolina didn't
It insists on its website that DoorDash drivers earn between $2 and $10 per delivery, depending on the 'distance and desirability of the order', and added that drivers take in 100% of tips given by customers.
A DoorDash spokesperson told the Verge: 'Everyday, Dashers go the extra mile to help connect consumers with the best of their local communities. That’s why we encourage customers to show their appreciation by tipping.

Lots of people are repeat customers and you'll still get on the feces list if you don't tip afterwards.
Was just thinking the IRS deduction figure should, or at least could be used as an alternate rule of thumb for tipping for those who can’t afford $1/mile.
Got to tell you, the freedom is a great incentive. I love doing it, too. I meet great people, I am my own boss, and yeah, I know I’m eating up the car, but quite honestly I did worse on my daily commute from the Eastern Shore of Maryland to DC every day for work. That having been said, I’ve just applied at Home Instead to become a caregiver (Lord knows I’ve got the experience after 8 years and a month of hospice care with mom!), but even they will not be able to pay me what I get with Doordash...so I may still do it a few days a week.
That is great in theory (honestly), but Dashers won’t pick up orders under $5.00 usually.
Yes, tipping in Europe is very different. It is considered an insult in Italy to leave more than token change on the table. But 17% is added to the food/drink bill for “service” in most places. It’s been a while since I was last there so things may have changed somewhat.
I had no idea it paid that low. I would not work for them it’s not worth it.
Should organize a campaign to order from them repeatedly with no tip and cancel when that window pops up.
I understand it and that’s why I always tip the recommended amount. There is a notice that 100% of the tips go to the dasher. My sister used to deliver for them too. :-)
I think most of the complaints are about the young dashers but the complaints make all dashers look bad. Most of ours are retirees.
There have been a couple of times his medicine was ready at Walgreens, and it would have been tough for me to leave and go get it. It arrived by Dasher but there was no option to tip on the Walgreens site. I gave her $5 for a tip because I know they make most of their money by tips.
Agree
I will continue to just pick up my own take-out orders.
And keep an eye on who’s making it and check it before you leave.
I seldom use take outs any more after noticing the help.
It’s people who are indulging themselves, claiming to be “too busy”(or too stoned) to go out to get something or cook at home. People on Reddit talk about spending $25 a day for lunch due to DoorDash and UberEats.
“Got to tell you, the freedom is a great incentive. I love doing it, too.”
I get that, working for myself has been my life. Even with work and 1 or 2 side hustles I always enjoyed what I was doing because I was my own boss. May it continue to work out for you!
Good post yours. Tipping is of course a reward for good service. It makes sense for a waiter/waitress at a restaurant. But not for for a delivery driver.
A bad waiter is not attentive. But that doesn’t apply to a delivery driver. Either the food arrives, or it doesn’t. The driver doesn’t even have control of the time. The kitchen schedule does.
So in delivery cases, the tip is really a delivery fee. Not paying that delivery fee is simply trash behavior.
I AM AVERY GOOD TIPPER EVEN IF THE PERSON just does their job. I guess I am a sucker for working people since my mother was a waitress at different times. But I don’t submit to pressure. Pressure brings no tip and no repeat business.
They’re right. That’s basic math. People are motivated by money. Give em more, get better service.
Have never, ever wanted some unknown, “part-time,” unmotivated, 3rd party-employed person handling my food. I’ll eat bread and water first.
This is hideous on several levels. 1.) Paying a premium for food to be delivered when in the past food was delivered for free. 2.) Paying for lousy food. At least it is lousy compared to what I can cook. 3.) Paying a tip prior to service being rendered. Yeah, do that suckers!
If he’s 85, he’s fine.
There was a comedy bit by Lewis Black about the oldest man in America.
He was 110, living alone, and had full mental faculties.
He said he narrowed his diet down at 90.
He only had bread fried in fat back, and 3 gallons of Thunderbird a week.
If you don’t tip your order is pretty much guaranteed to arrive with gobs of spit on it.
Never used Door Dash and now I certainly won’t use Door Dash in the future
Saw a guy at a hotel front desk
He said he just paid $73-$75 for 2 Subway sandwiches to be delivered
That’s like $20 of sandwiches
He just told me that no more than 7 days ago
I was there when he picked up his food
Exactly!
Tips are NOW EXPECTED part of a transaction!
PATHETIC!!!!!
